The university focuses on providing high-quality teaching and student experiences while producing excellent research that translates into meaningful products and services. ANU degrees are delivered through seven academic colleges.
Many alumni attribute their career success to the collaborative and mentor relationships they developed with their teachers and researchers and the skill-building opportunities they took up during their studies, such as workplace internships and student exchanges.
ANU research addresses a range of important issues, from biodiversity, climate change, energy alternatives, food and regional security to combating disease, regulation, justice and the law, physics, engineering, humanities and the arts.
Work-integrated learning courses and internships give ANU students opportunities to apply what they have learned in real-world settings while earning credit towards their degree. The university offers these and other skills development programs through its seven academic colleges and local, national and international partnerships with government agencies and industry.
ANU offers undergraduate and postgraduate degree programs in:
These programs include master's degrees in research.
Most of the courses at ANU are full-time and require students to learn in person, but there are some options available for students who wish to study part-time or who want to learn remotely.
Each faculty in the university has academics who are experts in their fields and invests in the resources they need to provide an excellent education to students. Students learn in innovative lecture halls, laboratories and a range of other spaces. Among them are a recording studio, a moot court, a SkyMapper survey telescope, Gadi – the Southern Hemisphere's fastest supercomputer, a 3D maker space and one of the world's largest 14UD pelletron heavy ion accelerator facilities.
PhD students at ANU can look forward to being part of a dynamic research community and receiving excellent support from supervisors in their academic college.
Prospective international students applying to ANU need to:
Because different courses have different requirements, students are advised to research their chosen degree as soon as they can to ensure they fulfil these criteria. Some ANU degrees have requirements beyond academic achievement, including portfolios of existing work.
For undergraduate study, ANU's minimum admission requirements include:
For postgraduate study, students will need to have:
ANU offers a range of internal and external scholarships that can help, support and encourage students during their studies. These recognise academic achievement and unique challenges and can help cover tuition and living expenses.
As the criterion for each scholarship is different, it is important that students find those best suited to them and apply on time. Students are also automatically considered for some scholarships when they apply to the university, for which they may not need to apply separately.
The following scholarships are just a couple of those available to international students.
This scholarship provides academically outstanding undergraduate and postgraduate students with a 25 percent reduction in tuition fees over the term of their degree.
In association with the China Scholarship Council (CSC), ANU is now offering opportunities to research students and scholars from China.
Students can access more information about the scholarship application process on the university's website.
Students can live and study on the vibrant ANU campus in the heart of Canberra. ANU guarantees undergraduate and postgraduate first-year, first-semester students a room in campus accommodation.
Students can indicate their preference for self-catered or catered accommodation in their application. There are numerous accommodation options to choose from, each with a diverse residential community.
All residences have 24-hour security, outdoor spaces, study rooms, common rooms and facilities, such as laundries, kitchens and bathrooms and living areas. They are a short walk or bike ride from shops, restaurants, public transport and other amenities.
Living in a supportive student residence is a great way to adapt to university life and to make lifelong friendships. Students in campus accommodation participate in events and co-curricular activities, organised by clubs and societies, which help them settle into and thrive in their new home.
Support networks on campus help students with enrolment, exams and assessments, homesickness and cultural adjustments. They also provide social and wellbeing opportunities that build independence, and medical and pastoral care services.
ANU is a vibrant and contemporary university that is constantly developing new research and innovations to inform students' learning experiences - and make a difference to the lives of communities in the Asia-Pacific and the world.
The discovery of the ability, previously not known, of a group of immune system cells, called Atypical B cells (ABCs), to fight malaria and other infectious diseases has gone a long way in helping scientists debunk conventional thinking on the role of ‘junk cells' in fighting diseases. According to the scientists, ABCs could also prove vital in the development of new treatments for chronic autoimmune conditions like lupus.
This important discovery provides fresh insight into the role of the immune system in fighting infections and brings scientists closer to harnessing the natural defences of the body to fight malaria. The researchers also suggested that ABCs have long been associated with malaria, as patients suffering from the disease have a greater number of these cells in their system as compared to the general population.
