What are the IVY League Universities?

The Northeastern United States is home to eight of the most prestigious private universities in the world, known collectively as the Ivy League. These universities are considered some of the oldest and most prestigious universities in the USA.

The Ivy League universities are well known for their academic rigour, comprehensive undergraduate programs and competitive athletics programs. Ivy League universities are often associated with a high standard of academic achievement, and admission to one of these universities is considered an accomplishment in its own right.

The Ivy League universities were established during the colonial era of the United States, with the oldest university, Harvard University, being founded in 1636. The Ivy League universities have been instrumental in shaping the American education system, producing a long list of accomplished graduates, including US presidents, Nobel laureates and business leaders. Ivy League universities have always been recognised for their commitment to academic excellence, and their graduates are known for their exceptional intellectual abilities and leadership qualities.

The Ivy League universities are made up of the following eight institutions:

• Brown University

• Columbia University

• Cornell University

• Dartmouth College

• Harvard University

• University of Pennsylvania

• Princeton University

• Yale University

Admission to an Ivy League university is highly competitive, with acceptance rates ranging from 4% to 15%. They receive tens of thousands of applications every year, and the admissions process is incredibly selective, with each university having its own unique criteria for admission.
