Designated Learning Institutions List in Canada

Designated Learning Institutions List in Canada

Find out everything you need to know about the Designated Learning Institutions in Canada for international students.

It's no surprise that Canada is considered to be one of the most popular study destinations for international students. The country provides abundant opportunities for research studies, a multicultural and safe environment, affordable tuition fees and cost of living, high-quality education, and profitable post-study opportunities.

However, bear in mind that educational institutions are classified into two types in Canada: DLIs and non-DLIs, and if you want to pursue your degree in Canada for more than six months, you must obtain a study permit, which is only valid for educational institutions that are approved by the Canadian government as Designated Learning Institutions (DLIs).

What is DLI (Designated Learning Institutions) in Canada?

A Designated Learning Institution (DLI) is a recognised educational institution in Canada that is authorised by the province or territory to accept international students. So, if you intend to pursue higher education in Canada, be sure that your institution is on the list of DLIs, or your study visa will be invalid.

How to check if your institution is on the approved list?

Step 1: Go to the government's official Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC) website.

Step 2: Choose the province or territory in which your university or college is located.

Step 3: Enter the university/college name, city, and any relevant information in the search box.

Step 4: Write down the DLI number in the area under "Details of Intention to Study in Canada" on your study permit application.

Note that a Canadian institution with multiple campuses or colleges may have a unique DLI number for each site. When searching, make sure that you enter the exact location.

Reasons to choose DLI colleges in Canada

In Canada, each province or territory has been entrusted with the responsibility of designating schools that enrolls international students at a post-secondary level. The Designated Learning Institution list may include colleges, universities, private career colleges, as well as vocational and language schools.

There are three main reasons for choosing a designated learning institution in Canada:

  • DLI universities/colleges are governed by the federal government or a federal agency.

  • They meet all provincial higher education standards in Canada.

  • DLI-accredited institutions in Canada's colleges and universities are recognised around the world.

List of DLI Colleges in Canada

Canada's DLI has a drawn-out list that provides a wide range of choices for students. As an international student, you can select them based on the province or city in which you want to live. You should also be aware that all Canadian educational institutions have a DLI number, which is a unique identification number for each institution on the DLI list.
