University of Limerick Courses: What to Study at UL?

The University of Limerick courses are offered in areas such as Applied Sciences, Business and Management, Education, Humanities, Social Science, and Engineering. Bachelor Courses

Bachelor of Digital Culture and Communications

Digital Culture and Communications can be taken on both LM002 Bachelor of Arts and& LM019 Bachelor of Science in Social Sciences. The subject combinations & course structures can be reviewed on the appropriate programme page.

The development of digital and social media has led to profound changes in our cultural practices. Increasingly, our lives are lived through mediated communication, which makes it even more urgent to examine the relationship between culture, media, and technology.

Entry Requirements for Applicants from Ghana:

To be part of the University of Limerick’s international students, you are required to hold your Senior Secondary School Certificate (SSSC) or a West African Senior School Certificate (WASSC) with good grades plus an acceptable International Foundation Year or equivalent. Final exams should include the English language, Mathematics and one other language. Apart from these, there are other subject requirements for specific courses. Nonetheless,

English language is a requirement to also apply.

The tuition fee for the University of Limerick international students is about €12,362 per session.

Bachelor of Engineering in Chemical & Biochemical Engineering

This programme is the only course of its kind in the Midwest and Western regions of the country. Engineering is the central area of expertise at the University of Limerick, underpinning many other important and, sustainable industries and businesses within both the Irish and global economies. Such enterprises include biopharmaceuticals, fuels, chemicals, and drug manufacturing, energy production, food and beverage processing, environmental waste remediation, and electronic component manufacturing.

The Irish pharmaceutical, chemical and biochemical industries are the main contributors of the outstanding influx of exports in Ireland thereby further proving that these sectors are consistently stable and resilient, even in harsh economic conditions.

In all of these areas, a chemical/biochemical engineer is of key importance both in the design and operations, of the processing systems and in the development of pharmaceutical products.

Entry Requirements for Applicants from Ghana:

The University of Limerick BM BS Graduate Entry Medical Programme is open to graduates from any discipline. It has a highly innovative curriculum which offers you the opportunity to complete undergraduate medical training in four years, plus in an environment that is specifically designed for graduate students.

During those four years of study, you will be taught the basic medical and clinical sciences necessary to form the basis for postgraduate training which will prepare you for a career in any branch in medicine.

Non-EU Entry Requirements

• Candidates must hold a minimum of 2.1 (second class honours, grade one) result in their first honours bachelor’s degree (NFO Level 8).

• For candidates who are able to meet this requirement, GAMSAT (Graduate Australian Medical Schools Admissions Test), or in the case of North American applicants, MCAT will be used as an instrument for selection.

• Non-EU applicants must also attend an interview as part of the selection process.

Validity of GAMSAT scores

GAMSAT scores are considered valid for two years. For example, the results from GAMSAT 2021 will be valid for application to the Graduate Entry Medicine Programme at UL in 2021 or 2022 but not in 2023.

Masters of Interaction and Experience Design

The Master in Interaction and Experience Design (formerly known as Interactive Media) is designed specifically for graduates who are interested in pursuing studies that combine technological competence with design and artistic endeavours. It offers unique opportunities for designers, computer scientists, and artists to explore their potential in new areas (experience, interaction and participatory design, internet of things, social media and virtual reality, mobile and physical computing), across a wide range of activities, such as digital multimedia, software development, interactive installations, human-centred research, and education.

Entry Requirements

A primary degree (Level 8 - National Qualifications Authority of Ireland) in any subject area, with first- or second-class honours. A portfolio of the applicant's own work that demonstrates the applicant's creative ability. This can be artwork, websites, software, writing, etc. Applicants may be called for an interview. The interview normally takes 20-30 minutes and includes a review of the applicant’s portfolio.

Masters of Sustainable Resource Management: Policy and Practice

This one-year MSc programme offers a combination of interdisciplinary and practical approaches to sustainable resource management, with an emphasis on policy and practice in Ireland and Europe. The programme provides students with the knowledge and skills required to develop strategies for the efficient use of natural resources while considering economic, social and environmental considerations. This one-year MSc programme is distinctive in several important ways. While we recognize the major environmental and sustainability challenges facing us, the focus is not on the challenges themselves, which are well known, but rather on actions we can take to reduce the threats and enhance our resilience. Students come from a wide variety of countries and disciplines but share a common interest in a desire to learn what has been done, and what might be done, to address these challenges. All the modules are taught by active researchers and experienced practitioners.

Entry Requirements

At least a second-class honours primary degree (Level 8 - National Qualifications Authority of Ireland) in an appropriate discipline, or a professional or other equivalent qualification recognised by both the University of Limerick and NUI Galway is required. This course is suitable for graduates with a primary degree in the Environmental Sciences,/ Engineering, /Economics or Geography, /Biological Sciences, /Ecology and Earth Sciences who wish to extend their knowledge and skills for a career related to resource management. Students with relevant experience are most welcome to apply. A strong personal statement demonstrating their interest in the course is also essential as this will be considered as part of the application process. Irish Government’s Student Grant Scheme: SUSI grants

The Student Grant Scheme is the main financial support scheme for students studying in Ireland and abroad. It is also known as the SUSI grant because the Student Universal Support Ireland (SUSI) is the awarding authority for the Student Grant Scheme.

To be eligible for student funding, you must meet the following eligibility criteria:

• Nationality condition

• Residence condition

• Means test

• Approved course of study:

  (You must be attending an approved course of study)

• Progression:

  (You must be progressing from your previous level of study)

• Maximum period of grant assistance

We cover each of these conditions below.

1. Nationality Condition

To get a student grant you must be a citizen of:

• Ireland

• UK

• An EU or EEA country

• Switzerland

If you are not a citizen of any one of these countries, you may still qualify for a grant if:

• You have refugee status.

• You have subsidiary protection status.

• You are a family member of an EU/EEA citizen.

• You are a spouse, civil partner, or dependent child of an Irish citizen.

• You were granted ‘leave to remain’ under Section 3 of the Immigration Act 1999. This is also called residency

  following a notification of intention to deport.

• You were granted ‘leave to remain’ under Section 49 of the International Protection Act 2015.

• You were granted Humanitarian Leave to Remain before the commencement of the Immigration Act 1999.

• You are an applicant for International Protection who qualifies for the International Protection Student Scheme (for Further and Higher Education Students) 2022-2023. See 'Student support scheme for asylum seekers' below.

You should have received a letter that states under what provision you have been granted residence. If you have residency that was granted for a reason other than those described above (for example, because you are the parent of an Irish citizen child), then unfortunately, you do not qualify for a student grant, even if you have a Stamp 4.

2. Residence Condition

You must have been a resident in the state for at least 3 of the previous 5 years in the last 5 years to qualify for a maintenance grant. In other cases, if you are now temporarily a resident elsewhere in the EU but you were a resident in Ireland for 3 - 5 years in the last 5 years, then you are still qualified.

Now, if you meet all the criteria above for the condition regarding your residency, then you may still qualify for a fee grant or a postgraduate fee contribution as a tuition student.

1. Means Test

The means test for a student grant in 2022-2023 is based on you or your family's gross income for the previous full tax year (2021). However, if you or your family have had a change of circumstances (which is likely to be permanent) since 31 December 2021, your changed circumstances will be considered in the application.

4. Approved Course of Study

You must be attending a course that is approved for a student grant. You can read a list of approved institutions and courses on SUSI's website.

5. Progression

In general, you do not get a grant for repeating a year or attending a course at a level that does not represent a progression from your previous studies.

However, second-chance students may be eligible for a grant. A second-chance student is someone who is aged over 23, did not successfully complete an earlier course and is returning to do an approved course after a full break in studies of at least 5 years. You may take a course during this 5-year break and still qualify as a second-chance student given that the course is below the undergraduate level and meets the progression rules.

6. Maximum Period of Grant Assistance

You do not qualify for the Student Grant Scheme if you have already received a grant for the maximum number of periods or years allowed for the course you are taking.
