The Master of Arts in Molecular Biology, Cell Biology, & Biochemistry (MCBB) program at Boston University delves into the intricate workings of life at the cellular and molecular level. This interdisciplinary program equips students with a comprehensive understanding of these fundamental biological fields, preparing them for careers in research, biotechnology, or related professions. It caters to individuals with a strong foundation in biology and a desire to explore living organisms.
Degree requirements: To earn a MA in Molecular Biology, Cell Biology, & Biochemistry (MCBB) from Boston University, students must complete a total of eight courses (32 credits). Core coursework covers foundational areas such as biochemistry, molecular biology, and advanced cell biology. Students also select elective courses to deepen their knowledge in specific areas of interest. The program culminates in either a scholarly review paper or a research thesis, allowing students to demonstrate their mastery of the field through in-depth analysis or original research.
The Molecular Biology, Cell Biology & Biochemistry (MCBB) Program offers two paths to the MA degree: the MA with Scholarly Review Paper and the MA with Research Thesis, both designed to provide a solid foundation in these three interdisciplinary fields through coursework, seminars, and research.
The program culminates with a thesis, which can be either research-based or literature-based. Research-based theses are founded on original research performed in a faculty member's laboratory. Literature-based theses comprise a comprehensive review of a defined scientific field, as supervised by a faculty member. The primary goal of the program is to propel students into successful research careers in the biotechnology and pharmaceutical industries. The program accepts post-bachelor's applicants with degrees in related disciplines where the focus has been on biology, chemistry, biotechnology, biochemistry, or a relevant field.
MA students must complete the degree within three years, though most of our students complete this within 2 years. PhD students must complete the degree within seven years, though most of our students complete this within 5-6 years.
