Coast Mountain College (CMTN) is a modern educational institution based in British Columbia, Canada. Serving a large area of local communities and welcoming students from across the world, it is a place where academic study is blended with incredible scenery and nature – students can learn, work, and play in one of the world's most spectacular locales.
There are five campuses making up the college, including those at Terrace, Prince Rupert, Smithers, Hazelton and Haida Gwaii. The primary campus is at Terrace, where many of the main college facilities can be found.
The college offers a number of study programs at different levels, including apprenticeships and field studies, as well as courses designed to serve as a pathway to university-level education at nearby institutions in Canada. There are also Upgrade courses for students who don't yet meet the minimum requirements for certain courses at CMTN.
The college has extensive support facilities, including physical and mental wellbeing help and teams dedicated to assisting with accommodation, finance, accessibility and career issues. Students at CMTN will realize their full potential, with incredible support, while learning in breath-taking surroundings.
With the beautiful location of the campuses, students are able to take advantage and explore the stunning coastal region. Various outdoor pursuits are supported locally, while the college's own library also rents out bicycles, snowshoes and more.
Coast Mountain College is an excellent college for students who wish to learn in a scenic, inspiring location away from the bustle of typical city colleges, without sacrificing the modern conveniences for a full student lifestyle.
Many courses incorporate the surrounding area into the course material, giving students incredible opportunities to apply their learning to the natural world. However, regardless of the course, all students at CMTN will benefit from a high-quality education led by expert staff, who have years of experience in not just their field but also in teaching, and sharing their knowledge.
The quality of teaching is reinforced by the quality of the resources offered, including an extensive library collection and contemporary IT facilities, plus modern tools and equipment for practical courses.
There are a wide variety of study programs available at Coast Mountain College, split between associate degrees, certificates & diplomas, degree partnerships and field schools. These qualifications are grouped together in six main areas:
Including broad arts degrees and a variety of field school options, such as ornithology, humans and their environment, and criminal justice.
Including business administration programs and degree partnerships, along with field schools that cover opportunities in the Skeena, and rural challenges in marketing.
Covering subjects such as practical nursing, health care assistant, and early childhood care.
With a range of programs including engineering, physical sciences, coastal ecology and field schools related to the surrounding coastal areas.
Specialising in apprenticeships including construction, carpentry, heavy mechanical trades, electricals and more.
Designed to help students meet the minimum levels of science and maths before progressing onto further study programs at CMTN.
The entry requirements for study at Coast Mountain College vary, but the first step for all international applicants is ensuring they meet the English language requirements – students must be able to provide an evaluation score from TOEFL, IELTS or another recognised body if they are not from one of the pre-approved English-speaking countries.
Once that is done, students can check whether their chosen course has a specific requirement for biology, chemistry, physics or maths qualifications. If they do, and students don't meet these requirements, they may instead apply for a Career & College Preparation (CCP) upgrading course, and then once they have completed that they can move onto their chosen program.
Students are then able to begin their application, submitting their transcripts and personal details along with the CAD 100 application fee. Once conditional acceptance has been granted, students can then pay a deposit towards their course and begin their application for a study permit with the Canadian government.
While international students applying for a place at Coast Mountain College will need to demonstrate their ability to fund their course, as part of their study permit application, that doesn't mean those same students are ineligible for financial support.
Indeed, the college has a wide range of programs available to help students, including various awards, scholarships and bursaries funded by the institution. There are also external awards and funding opportunities, with the college able to provide guidance to students who wish to apply.
While not all students will be eligible for these awards, the CMTN team are happy to help students explore their options, and where a non-repayable grant or scholarship is not available, other forms of emergency financial assistance can be provided during times of need.
Coast Mountain College is equipped with all the facilities students need to enjoy a well-rounded, active and rewarding study program. This includes comfortable, modern spaces in which to learn, including study spaces suitable for individual and group work.
The campus library is equipped with a wide range of physical and digital resources, whilst also allowing students to rent a bicycle and other outdoor equipment, including snowshoes and fishing rods. DVDs, tablets and laptops can also be rented.
The campus has its own Wellness Centre open 6 days a week, with fitness equipment available to use freely for students along with paid-for exercise classes. And there is on-campus accommodation available at the Terrace campus for students who wish to live close to the facilities and classrooms – off campus accommodation is available independently for other campus locations.
There are always new developments at Coast Mountain College, and students are advised to keep checking the college's website to learn of the success stories, new facilities, events and more that are happening on a regular basis.
One recent development is of particular note for international students – a previous international student and now local business owner has established a new CAD 1,000 award for future international students to help with the costs of tuition and living. It will be awarded twice a year, based on academic standing, career goals, and behavior.
While classrooms and IT facilities are invested in on a regular basis, the heritage of the college is also celebrated – exemplified by the raising of a new totem pole outside the student housing building on the Terrace campus last year.
Many of the advances at the college come from the student body too – such as the formation last year of a new Safe Spaces Movement to promote inclusivity among students.
