Doctor of Philosophy in Physics- Low Temperature Physics

The largest, most diverse low temperature physics group in North America, spanning research project from fundamental scient to exotic materials for applications in quantum leap to new technologies, and the search for dark matter.

The Department of Physics is dedicated to advancing the forefronts of knowledge in both pure and applied physics, thus providing an exciting intellectual climate for our graduate students. Our research activities include astrophysics (particle astrophysics, cosmology and gravitation), condensed matter and materials physics (experimental, theoretical and computational), low temperature physics, elementary particle physics (experimental and theoretical) and biological physics. With such diversity in research offerings you will have an opportunity to pursue research in most areas of contemporary physics. In spite of the size of our Department, we are committed to designing a program of graduate study that is tailored to your experience and interests. Our Graduate Coordinator sees that each of our graduate students receives personal attention and advice as they progress toward their advanced degree.

University of Florida Graduate School regulations prevent us from admitting applicants with a GPA below 3.0. The average GPA for enrolled students is about 3.6. Applicants with a GPA below 3.25 should be quite exceptional in some respect to receive full consideration.

The prerequisite for the physics graduate program is a four-year undergraduate degree in physics or a closely related field from an accredited institution. Entering graduate students are expected to have a strong undergraduate foundation in general physics, classical mechanics, elementary quantum mechanics, modern physics, electromagnetism, and thermodynamics, in addition to mathematics through differential equations and calculus. Promising students who lack proper background in one or more of these areas will still be considered for admission, but may expect to spend a portion of their first year taking transitional remedial courses.

Transcripts are required from every post-secondary institution (college or university) that you have attended. Your transcripts must show that you possess (or will possess) a four-year undergraduate degree, or its equivalent.
Official score report for the English language proficiency exam is required for most international students. Proficiency in the English language is required of applicants from countries (and from Puerto Rico) where English is not the official language. These applicants must submit official scores from the Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL), International English Language Testing System (IELTS), or the Michigan English Language Assessment Battery (MELAB). The Physics Department strongly recommends that international students take the internet-based TOEFL (the TOEFL-iBT) if possible. Please use institution code 5812 to send TOEFL score reports to the Office of Admissions. The English testing requirement may be waived if you have been enrolled in a degree-seeking program for one academic year, in a country where English is the official language, prior to your anticipated term of enrollment at UF.
Certification of Financial Responsibility. This form is required by the University, but it does not have to be completed before we review your application. This form can be submitted at a later date.
The Graduate Record Examination (GRE) General and Physics Subject Tests are not required for admission to the graduate Physics program at the University of Florida. Applicants who do wish to provide GRE scores may submit an original score report using Institution Code 5812 for the General Test, and Institution Code 0808 for the Physics Test.
Applicants with a bachelor's degree only, a minimum grade point average of B (3.0), calculated from all grades and credits after the semester where the applicant reached 60 semester hours or 90 quarter hours is required.
For applicants from countries where English is not the ofcial language, a minimum score on one of these English Language Skills tests, IELTS - 6.0,TOEFL IBT- 80, PBT- 550.
