Studying in Canada is one of the finest decisions you will make in life. To make this journey bump-free, you need certain documents that authorise your entry, stay, and activities in the new country. One of the most important documents on this list is a study permit . While a student visa authorises your entry into Canada, a study permit validates your stay in Canada (also known as the Great White North). It is a mandatory immigration document for an international student.
It is mandatory for all international students planning to pursue a course with a duration of more than six months in Canada.
When should you apply for a study permit?
Once you get your acceptance letter from the chosen college or university, you should immediately apply for a study permit in Canada .
The processing of your permit at the visa office usually takes up to 90 days.
It is always a good idea to keep the required documents ready before you start your study permit application. Here are the ones you will need to keep handy:
Acceptance letter from a Designated Learning Institution or DLI
Financial documents that prove you have enough funds to sustain yourself in Canada
English language proficiency test scores (usually overall 6 band score in IELTS at least)
A valid passport
Academic documents
Medical test
Biometrics
Once you have the documents in place, you can fill-up the form either online or offline. For an online application you should have:
Electronic copies of your documents
Valid debit or credit card to pay the application fee
The application form costs CAD 150 and the biometric costs CAD 85. Also, the permit, once issued, is valid throughout your study. Do note that you may also be required to pay a biometric fee. In case you pay any third-party fee for your medical test or police certificate, it should be paid to them directly and not be clubbed with your online application fee.

Once you have all this ready, you can create a secure IRCC (Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada) account, submit the application and wait for the result.
For a pen and paper application, the soft copy of the form will be replaced by an application package which will have all the documents required.
