I think there's loads of stuff that students can do to succeed in the first year. I think one is joining all of the events and that the university will put on for you when you arrive at the university. Not only will this mean that you're occupied and busy and enjoying yourself, but it's a great opportunity to meet loads of new people, which will be a big part of your experience. And I think the other thing as well is don't be afraid to ask. Lots of students will be in the same situation as you, including UK students as well. So please do ask.

The first steps for students who are in their first year is to be as proactive as possible, Is to network and come out of their comfort zone, not only stick yourself to your academic work, but try to push your limits and try to be somebody different from what you were in your home country. That's what will help you to build a personality which is highly respected in Australian community, not only in your personal life, but also in your professional life.

I think it is extremely important to try not to be shy and make friends with not just people who speak your language, but American friends as well, so that you can truly gain the full experience of studying in the US. Second, also really ask for help if you need it. Don't be shy. Reach out to your professors, your peers, as well as administrators so they can get the help early and not wait until the end where you feel like you're falling behind. Stay positive. That will be my advice.

One piece of advice that I have for international students studying in the US is to get involved on campus as much as possible. It's a really great way to meet other students, connect with faculty and staff and really integrate with the campus community. Whether you're at the undergraduate or postgraduate level, there are a lot of clubs and organizations you can join and some leadership opportunities that you can take part of too, which is a great way to enhance your resume. Whatever you do, make sure that you're brave, put your name out there and get involved as much as you can.

Here are my tips to succeed in your first year. First, make new friends. Second, try new things. Third, don't be afraid to ask a question. Four, adapt to the local culture. This will help you to settle faster. Five, join a student club or society, or become a student ambassador. This is a great opportunity to meet people who study the same course or shared a similar interests. And the most important thing is be yourself and have fun.

What tips would I give international students for succeeding? I think probably one of the best things a lot of our students have done is the Employability Plus program. This offers students opportunities to participate in community voluntary activities, and they'll get this recorded on the transcripts once they've completed. So a lot of students have told me they get such a great benefit from doing that program.
