Know about the exams you need to take to study in Canada

If you are planning to study in Canada, it is important to know which exams you’ll have to take for a successful application beforehand. These exams depend on which level you are looking to pursue your studies. Here’s a quick list of mandatory exams for seeking admission in a Canadian institution.

Language tests

All educational institutions require evidence of your English language proficiency. In order to prove so, you’ll have to take an English language proficiency test such as IELTS and submit your test scores.

The International English Language Testing System (IELTS)

IELTS is the most popular English language proficiency test and is recognised by more than 10,000 organisations around the world. Depending on your convenience, you can either opt to take the paper-based (results in 14 days) or computer-delivered (results in 3-5 days) module.

Academic exams required to study in Canada

Here’s a list of other tests you may have to take in order to seek admission in a Canadian institution:

Graduate Management Aptitude Test (GMAT): This test is to gauge the abilities of potential MBA enthusiasts who wish to pursue their higher education in Management or Business in Canada. This test aims to test your English, mathematics, and reasoning skills. However, there are a few renowned Canadian business schools that do not require GMAT such as Ivey Business School, Schulich School of Business (York University), DeGroote School of Business and Rotman School of Management (the University of Toronto).
Graduate Record Examinations (GRE): You’ll have to take this test if you are a MA or MS aspirant. While many business schools have begun to consider GRE scores before enrolling students in their MBA program, there are a few universities which continue to offer admission without the GRE scores. These include Brock University, Carleton University, Concordia University, Laurentian University, Lakehead University, Kwantlen Polytechnic University, Laval University, Memorial University of Newfoundland, Royal Roads University, Trent University, University of Lethbridge, University of Manitoba, University of New Brunswick, University of Northern British Columbia, University of Ontario Institute of Technology, University of Prince Edward Island, University of Regina and University of the Fraser Valley. Do check with your institution if you need to submit your GRE results beforehand.

Do note that several programs such as like Master of Fine Arts Programs, Executive Programs, Online Master’s program do not require submission of GRE scores.

Law School Admission Test (LSAT): This is a standardised test that will be an essential part of your application if you are applying for a Canadian law school. This certifies your expertise in reading and verbal skills
Scholastic Assessment Test (SAT): This measures your writing, analysing, and literacy skills to understand your behaviour under given circumstances. It is taken by high school graduates who wish to study further and apply for a college or university in Canada
Medical College Admission Test (MCAT): MCAT is a custom, computer-based test that evaluates your critical and analytical abilities, physical and biological science concepts along with verbal reasoning skills. While most Canadian medical institutions require an MCAT score, some candidates who already have an experience of three or more years may be exempted from the same. Do check with your institution if you are a tenured practitioner.
