New Zealand offers high-quality education, which is globally-recognised. According to the QS World University Rankings, all New Zealand universities appear in the top three per cent amongst universities worldwide. The New Zealand Qualifications Authority (NZQA) also ensures that institutions are registered to enrol international students and comply with qualification standards. The country’s education programmes and degrees are based on the British education system, which is known as the world’s most recognised and accredited system.
There is a wide pool of options available for a student who may choose to study in a university, Institute of Technology and Polytechnics (ITPs) or Private Training Establishments (PTEs).
Universities: All the eight New Zealand universities are ranked high in the QS World University Rankings. Besides this, all universities are bound to execute a quality assurance check to ensure that their goals, practices and policies are in place with the overall quality enhancement regime, which is supervised by the Committee on University Academic Programmes (CUAP) and the Academic Quality Agency for New Zealand Universities (AQA). |
Institute of Technology and Polytechnics (ITP): In New Zealand, there are 16 ITPs which provide high-quality vocational qualifications along with practical experience. These ITPs are government-owned and funded institutions formed to provide affordable education, and can be a suitable choice for a student who wants to start working immediately after graduation. |
Private Training Establishments (PTE): PTEs in New Zealand offer practical courses at all levels. These PTEs are privately-owned and funded institutions that also focus on specific areas or subjects like business, hospitality, travel, etc. There are over 100 PTEs in New Zealand. |
We understand that studying abroad can be an expensive affair but studying in New Zealand is quite affordable than many other countries. All the high-ranking universities and colleges in New Zealand have their own fee structures, but, at an average, a student needs approx. NZ$ 22,000 to NZ$ 35,000 a year to study in the country.

In order to provide support to international students, New Zealand offers a wide range of scholarships. Students may apply for an institutional scholarship, program-specific scholarship, accommodation scholarship or even a government scholarship. Since 2016, a special scholarship has been introduced by Education New Zealand for Indian students – New Zealand Excellence Awards (NZEA).

International students in New Zealand can apply for a post-study work visa depending upon their qualification level and location. The duration of the post-study work visa may range between 1 to 3 years. For example, if a student completes a master’s degree in New Zealand, they may apply for a 3 years’ post-study work visa. New Zealand also allows students to work part-time while pursuing their education. Thus providing them with an opportunity to take care of their weekly living expenses and gaining more practical experience while studying. International students can work up to 20 hours a week and are entitled to a minimum wage of approx. NZ$ 18 an hour.
Special benefits are extended to students who decide to pursue their PhD in New Zealand. For instance, international students who pay domestic tuition fees can get full-time work rights while pursuing their PhD.
