You’ve gotten your Bachelor’s degree and enthusiastically applied to enter a course at your dream university.

After what seems like a “long” wait, you receive an application rejection letter. The college rejection may seem overwhelming at first, especially if it is from your dream school.

Applying to a university course is a process that needs to be handled with care and the most crucial step is the application itself for both the University and Visa.

Receiving a rejection letter can happen to anyone and it’s good to know what are some of the common reasons for such.

The 2 main reasons for a college rejection

There are two main reasons why you may have gotten a university or a visa rejection. W

Firstly, the demand is greater than the supply. This is very true and common for universities and institutions, even more so for prestigious ones.

With acceptance rates into colleges dropping over the years, getting into university schools are becoming increasingly competitive.

Secondly, the application requirements are incomplete with missing test scores and do not meet university standards. These requirements are largely similar for Visa applications as well.

On top of your banking and financial statements that may show a lack of proof to support your education and life as a student, a key aspect is not meeting the academic requirements with the right IELTS band scores.

What to do when your university or visa application gets rejected

1. Get the core parts of your application in order

Filing an appeal into the course and reapplying is possible. However, for a positive outcome, showcasing a proficient IELTS band score in your application may just help you in earning a spot in the university.

A high IELTS band score demonstrates your proficiency in the English language, thereby meeting one of the basic institution’s academic standards.

Another important aspect is to double-check if all of the university requirements for submission is complete and submitted on time.

Ensure all documents such as recommendation letters and test scores needed are present and check for any spelling or grammatical errors. While these may seem trivial, they are key aspects on whether your application gets reviewed and taken seriously by the admission counsellors.

2. Take a foundation course

Consider taking a gap year to work on developing your “spike”, which helps you in standing out from other applicants.

Either take up a foundation course or an undergraduate preparation course that may be offered by other institutions. These can help you gain course credits for your reapplication as a transfer student into the college of your choice.

For example, you may want to take up academic modules such as Macroeconomics and Business Mathematics which are relevant to your Business degree.

This can be added to your resume or CV, demonstrating your ongoing commitment to this particular field and further strengthening your application.

3. Search for alternative courses

With the increase in college rejection rates, having a backup plan is a strategic move. Instead of probably a UK college, how about an Australian or Canadian one?

Hunt for alternative courses that are similar or of the same field, in other countries with equally credible institutions.

For example, it’s perfectly fine to pick up a degree in Creative writing instead of Journalism to reach your end goal of becoming a content specialist, a marketing or public relations executive.
