The UK is home to some of the world’s most prestigious colleges and universities including University of Cambridge and University of Oxford. Getting a Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) in the UK is typically a shorter and more independent route, with programs generally lasting three to four years.
UK doctoral candidates are registered as students and can choose to undertake their doctoral work on a full-time basis or do their research part-time alongside full-time or part-time work.
For Malaysian students who are keen to pursue the PhD journey in the UK, there are two main types of doctorates available: The Doctor of Philosophy (PhD or DPhil) and a professional or practice-based doctorates (EdD, DBA, DSocSci, DProf, etc).
The former combines structured doctoral training programs with collaboration with business or other organisations, while the latter is related to a doctoral candidate’s profession or practice - usually involving a structured period of initial research training, practice-based materials, and a written commentary or thesis.

Admission requirements
The majority of institutions require PhD candidates to possess a Master’s degree as well as a Bachelor's degree graded at 2:1 or above. Some exceptional cases may accept those with only a Bachelor’s degree with significant professional experience. A research proposal will also be required, along with English language proficiency test scores for non-native English speakers.
