When is Canada Day and why celebrate?

Topics covered

Canada Day is celebrated to grant the right to local government to the federation consisting of four states that make up Canada today, from 1867.On 1982, it changed its name, which was previously known and celebrated as “Dominion Day”, to be celebrated as “Canada Day” on July 1 and became more nationalistic.

It is simply celebrated that the British regions of North America are gathered under the same name and that their political and social cultures are stronger. Today, great celebrations take place across the country, and many businesses, schools, public institutions and private organizations are closed for this celebration.

Barbecues, fairs, outdoor events and fireworks are held. The biggest celebration is usually attended by the prime minister and members of the Royal family from the UK in Ottawa, the capital of Canada.

In order to honor the Canadian Day, many Canadians are wearing red and white colors that day and events are organized to come together. Although tourist attractions and restaurants are usually open, you can make your plans considering that, especially if you will be in Canada on these dates.

Large festivities are often held in major cities in Canada, such as Ottawa, Vancouver, Toronto, and Montreal. More formal and large parades are organized in Ottawa. For example, in 2011, in order to celebrate Canada Day, the Cambridge Duke and Duchess attended the festivities and acrobatic aircraft shows called "Canadian Snowbirds" were organized.
