Gone are the days when we would mingle without too much effort. I feel as though the older you get, the harder it is to find people with similar interests.
However, there are numerous ways to find people who enjoy the same things as you do. You just need to be keen to go out there, engage with new people and with time you will find yourself creating lasting friendships.
Here are a few things I did to find likeminded people.
University is a place where you can meet all kinds of different and interesting people. Keep in mind that everyone around you is feeling awkward. So even if it feels super weird, show up for those meetups and social night outs.
Get talking to people because no one ever made friends by staying in their room and binge-watching Netflix!
Fancy some dance and music? There's a definite chance that numerous people do the same. Getting involved in the university clubs is a sure shot way of meeting people who enjoy the same things as you do. Also, being involved in such activities is crucial because, we need to have a life apart from the academics, too right?
There is vast variety of clubs most Australian uni's offer. From language, sports, dance, music, cooking, Sci-Fi to even a club for 'Potterhead's'. I mean, how cool is that?
Look up what's happening around your city. If there is anything that catches your eye, put on your shoes and go! Some places where I found my set of people were at cultural festivals, dance classes and sometimes even at the local cafés.
In short, likeminded people could be of any age and can be found anywhere. One just needs to be willing to be out there and initiate the conversation.
Social media has made it possible to find people at the tip of your fingers. Being a part of a meetup group makes it easier for you to spend time doing things that matter the most to you. It also helps you create a network of people who you can connect with and participate in activities that you are passionate about.
It is important to note that, networking isn't just for business purpose, it also helps in finding new opportunities, further realising one's passion and perhaps gaining a new perspective about things.
Altogether, it's another clichéd, yet true life lesson. The further you step away from your comfort zone, the better are the chances of new opportunities unfolding themselves. So, start meeting new people, exploring the city, and who knows, you might end up knowing yourself better.
