So here in Australia, we like to shorten everything, and that includes the names of places right here in Perth, for example, Fremantle becomes real and the world famous Rottnest Island becomes Ruto. And both of them, by the way, are fantastic places to visit here in Perth.

Hi everyone, this is Sarah from UniSA. So a slang word that we use here in Adelaide is the word 'heaps' instead of the word really. So if something is really cold, you'd say, oh, this is heaps cold. So, for example, you want to say, oh, UniSA is heaps good.

G'day, mate, how are you doing? Much like in other countries, Australians have taken and converted English and turned it into something else. In Australia, we speak what is commonly known as Australian English or Aussie English. It's not that different from English, but involves a lot of slang and abbreviations which are quite easy to learn and get used to, like university becomes uni, football becomes footy and so on. Or maybe even add or to the words like afternoon becomes oral, etc. .

Hi Guys, Sean here, I'm sitting in the graffiti tunnel at the University of Sydney's main campus. This is actually a walkway between two buildings. It originally started as a protest in the Vietnam War in the 60s. And it's still used today as a place of expression for students to speak your expression Australians slang. We love to use it. I'll leave you with a few phrases that you'd like to hear in Sydney and let you try and work out what I'm saying.

We get in a ute, go for feed at Macías before the footy thenon with our mates at the pub after.
