What is plagiarism?

The other meaning of the Turkish Language Association for the word is "pilferage". It is defined as presenting / using other people's thoughts, expressions and inventions as their own without reference to that person. Plagiarism, which is considered crime and ethically wrong in the academic world, in the business world, can have personal, professional, ethical and legal consequences.

Plagiarism can have personal, ethical and professional consequences such as damage to reputation and reliability, as well as legal consequences that can lead to arrest due to copyright. Plagiarism affects the validity and reliability of information, and systematically cause to spread the fraud and sloppy researches.

What are the 5 common types of plagiarism?

According to the “Plagiarism Spectrum” article shared on the pages of many universities such as Edingburgh University, the most used types of plagiarism are:

1. Clone

To present a job that belongs to someone else as if it belongs to him by being copied word for word.

2. Ctrl+C

Copying the text from a single source to a certain extent, without any changes. Unlike Cloneing, alternative sentence initials and conjunctions can be used but most of the content is taken from a different source, unchanged, without any citation marks.

3. Mashup / Gathering different sources

Creation of sources mostly written on the same or similar subjects by gathering them together, placing them in between and without reference to the source.

4. Recycle

It is the recycling of previous works / ideas without showing any source and changing a different title.

5. Find – replace

Replacing the keywords of a work with a different word with the same meaning, but continuing to use the general structure of another content without reference.

How can we prevent plagiarism?

Whether you're a student writing your research thesis, a journalist writing important news, or a writer preparing for your book the things you need to be careful about to prevent plagiarism can be listed as follows:

  • Before you copy-paste the source, state the idea that the source wants to explain in your own words and show the source you commented.
  • If you use the same expression, phrase or sentence used by the author in the source you use, use quotation marks.
  • Express your own opinions.
  • Use programs that check plagiarism such as Plagirism Detector, Turnitin, Grammarly. Using these programs, you can prevent plagiarism by seeing the sentences that you missed and need to be quoted before submitting your research or article.
