What is IELTS?

IELTS (International English Language Testing System) is an English language proficiency test for non-native speakers. It is jointly owned by the British Council, IDP and Cambridge English Language Assessment. IELTS is accepted by over 12,000 universities, colleges, professional bodies and government agencies in over 140 countries around the world. Looking to book your test? No problem, we can help.

Who can take IELTS?

IELTS can be taken by anyone who wants to demonstrate their English language proficiency. This includes students, professionals, and people who are looking to migrate to a country where English is the primary language.

How can I book an IELTS test?

You can book an IELTS test online, You will need to provide your personal details, such as your name, date of birth, and passport number. You will also need to choose a test date and location.

Just choose your preferred IELTS Test Centre and pick a test date that suits you. Once you've determined that, follow the instructions to book your test.

What to expect on the test day?

The IELTS test is divided into four sections: listening, reading, writing, and speaking.

The listening section lasts for 40 minutes and consists of 40 questions. You will listen to a series of recordings and answer questions about what you have heard.

The reading section lasts for 60 minutes and consists of 3 passages. You will read the passages and answer questions about them.

The writing section lasts for 60 minutes and consists of 2 tasks. In Task 1, you will be given a graph, table, chart, or diagram and asked to write a summary of it. In Task 2, you will be given a topic and asked to write an essay.

The speaking section lasts for 15 minutes and consists of 3 parts. In Part 1, you will be asked a series of questions about yourself. In Part 2, you will be given a task card and asked to talk about a particular topic for 2 minutes. In Part 3, you will have a discussion with the examiner about the topic you talked about in Part 2.

Will I take all test components on the same day?

Whether or not you take all the components (Speaking, Writing, Reading and Listening) of your IELTS test on the same day or not will depend on where you sit your test. Please check with your Test Centre for details about how they deliver IELTS.

How long does it take to get my IELTS test results?

Results for computer-delivered IELTS tests are available within 1-5 days, and for paper-based IELTS in 13 calendar days.

Can I reschedule or cancel my test?

Yes, you can reschedule or cancel your test no later than 5 calendar days before your test date. Your Test Centre will advise on the process and any administration costs to complete the refund or transfer.

When can I re-sit the test?

There is no time limit on sitting the test. However, we strongly recommend you practise your IELTS skills in Writing, Reading or Speaking until you're confident you've done enough to increase your band score before taking the test again. I have an accent - will I be understood?

IELTS is an international test , we hear all accents. In your Speaking test, you’ll not lose marks for speaking with an accent but your pronunciation is important. Rest assured, your examiner will match your speaking pace and proficiency. Feel free to clarify the question if you're unsure.

What is the IELTS Band scale?

You will be given a score from 1 to 9 for each part of the test – Listening, Reading, Writing and Speaking. The average produces your overall band score. You can score whole (e.g., 5.0, 6.0, 7.0) or half (e.g., 5.5., 6.5, 7.5) bands in each part of the test.

What can I take into the examination room?

You can only bring in pens, pencils, erasers and the valid passport you used on the IELTS Application Form with you to the test. Everything else must be left outside the examination room.
