As an extra note, it is essential that you start applying for your graduate visa once you have graduated and your institution has confirmed you have completed your course.
Applications done for this visa must be made within 6 months of the official date of completion of your studies.
With the Temporary Graduate Visa, you will be able to stay in Australia for between 4 to 6 years after your studies and you will be able to travel, work or further your studies during this period.
How long you can stay will depend on your level of Australian study qualification. Starting from July 2023, a bachelor’s degree entitles you to 4 years, while master's and doctor’s will grant you 5 and 6 years respectively.
It is essential to note that you cannot extend this visa once it expires and you only have 3 other options to continue staying in the country.
These are to:
Apply for a second post-study work stream visa
Apply for specific skilled work visas
Apply for the pathway to permanent residency if you are a current or future temporary visa holder from Hong Kong
It is important to note that there are three different Temporary Graduate Visa Work Streams that you can apply for.
The Graduate Work Stream
This is for international students who have graduated with skills relevant to specific occupations that Australia needs
The Post-Study Work Stream
This visa is for international students who have recently graduated with a degree from an Australian Institution. You need a recent degree from a CRICOS-registered course.
Second Post-Study Work Stream
This visa is for international students who have held a first temporary graduate visa from the post-study workstream. It is like an extension.
It is important to note that processing time can range from 7 to 14 months, so applying as soon as possible is important.
To start applying, you will need to create an account at ImmiAccount and follow the instructions here.
If you are a graduate who holds a Hong Kong or British National Overseas Passport, under the Temporary Graduate Visa, you may stay for up to 6 years once you get your visa.
This gives you an added advantage in building your career in the country. In addition, you will also be able to access a migration pathway where you can apply for permanent residency after three to four years.
Through the subclass 191 and subclass 189 pathways, you’ll be able to gain permanent residency without having to meet the occupation or skill assessment requirements.
