Topics covered

There are so many things to see and do in the USA. If you want to explore your local town, city and other parts of the country, you will find that there are many travel options to suit your needs.

The USA has many airports across the country that makes it easy if you prefer to fly to various destinations.

Depending on where you are going and where you are coming from, your transport options include buses, trains and subways, taxis, planes, cars, bikes and of course, walking.

Public transportation

Found in most major cities, subways are an inexpensive way to get from A to B. It is a good idea to familiarise yourself with the subway system when you first arrive in the USA.

Trains, on the other hand, are more suited to travelling throughout the USA. However, they are slightly more expensive.

You can also travel around using the extensive bus system. Many providers offer smartphone apps that allow you to keep track of when the next bus arrives.

Cycling

Cycling is another great way to get around town, especially if you are in a smaller college town.

You will need to be familiar with road rules and wear a helmet at all times. If you are riding at night, your bike will need a front white light and rear red light.

Driving

It is important to remember that people in the USA drive on the right-hand side of the road. If you choose to drive, you must understand the road rules and have a valid driver's licence.

Some states require an International Driving Permit so be sure to check the motor vehicle department of the state you plan on driving in and apply ahead of time.

Student travel discounts

You might be eligible for discounts or promotions on public transport, so be sure to check your transport options online for the best fare options.
