OPT is optional practical training, which is a benefit offered to students on F1 student visas who have studied full time for one year and completed their degree in the United States. It gives you one year of work in the United States after graduation and possibly an extension of two years for students who have graduated in certain STEM fields.

OPT in the U.S. stands for Optional Practical Training. It allows international students to work after they've graduated for up to one year or 12 months. If you're studying in the STEM programs that science, technology, engineering and math, you can extend OPT for two additional years. So three years total working in the U.S. It's a great benefit for international students. So at the community college level, you would get one year no matter what your major. And after the bachelor's degree, you would get one to three years depending on your major.
