For Filipino students, having OSHC isn’t just a requirement—it’s your safety net while you chase your dreams in The Land Down Under. In a nutshell, OSHC is a type of health insurance specifically designed for international students. It ensures you have access to affordable healthcare during your stay in a foreign country, and in this case, it's Australia.
OSHC is mandatory for your student visa, so without it, your application won’t get approved. As a rule, you need to be covered from the day you arrive in Australia and throughout the duration of your visa.
You might already have insurance in the Philippines, but Australia’s rules are different. Only OSHC from an Australian-registered private health insurer is accepted. This ensures the government can regulate your coverage and protect you while you’re there.
At IDP, we give you two easy options:
Do it yourself online using a credit card.
Get help from our counselors, who can guide you and suggest policies that fit your needs.
No worries! IDP counselors can help you explore alternative payment methods.
Timing is everything when purchasing OSHC. Make sure your insurance covers the full length of your stay, including:
Your arrival date: Choose a start date up to 28 days before your course begins.
Your departure date: Extend coverage to match your visa’s end date.
Here’s a quick guide based on your course duration:
10+ months (finishing Nov–Dec): Visa valid until March of the following year.
10+ months (finishing Jan–Oct): Visa valid for two months after your course ends.
Less than 10 months: Visa valid for one month after your course ends.
Feeling overwhelmed? Don't worry because your IDP education counselor is here to help you calculate these dates to ensure everything’s aligned.
OSHC in Australia typically requires full payment upfront to meet visa requirements. This is because international students are mandated to have continuous coverage for the entire duration of their visa. While some OSHC providers advertise monthly cost equivalents for informational purposes, splitting the payment into monthly installments isn't a standard option for visa-compliant policies.
If affordability is a concern, comparing providers for the most cost-effective plan is a good approach. Some providers may allow payment flexibility under specific circumstances, so it's worth checking directly with them for detailed options. Needless to say, your IDP education counselor is more than ready to help you find the right provider that fits your priorities and budget.
It depends on your provider.
In some cases, those who have their student visas denied can get a partial or full refund on their OSHC. All they need to do is submit a copy of the denial letter from the Australian Department of Home Affairs, and their provider will take care of the rest.
