If you’re considering studying abroad in the UK but are feeling uncertain due to recent government policies, here’s some good news! UK Education Secretary, Bridget Phillipson, has given assurance to those who are in your shoes, announcing that the new Labour government will take a different approach, “Be in no doubt: international students are welcome in the UK."

This marks a positive change from what she called “mixed messaging” and the stringent policies issued by the previous government that may have caused some concern for students looking at the UK as a study destination.

A welcome statement for international students from the UK’s Education Secretary on 14 August 2024.

At the Embassy Education Conference on 23 July 2024, Phillipson addressed these concerns directly to set the record straight, “I want Britain to welcome those who want to come to these shores to study, and meet the requirements to do so.“

International students are valued and welcomed in the UK

She highlighted the Graduate Route visa, which allows international students to remain in the UK for two years after graduation — or three years if you complete a PhD — to work and contribute to society there. This route has been a significant draw for international students.

The Graduate Route visa had come under review earlier in 2024 under the previous government, which was mulling curbs on it. Now, the UK Education Secretary has declared that international students had been treated as “political footballs” for too long, and that the current government wants to provide opportunity for everyone, with international partnerships central to this drive.

“Students benefit from coming to the UK, and we benefit from them being here”

When you decide to study abroad, many factors dear to you come into play — your future career, finances and family are some of the top ones.

Phillipson acknowledged the bravery it takes to study abroad, to take a leap of faith far from your home country to develop new skills and chase new dreams, and emphasized the new government's commitment to “do everything we can to help you succeed.”

Her speech also highlighted the freshness of thought international students bring that breathes new life into UK society. She noted how international students drive dynamism in arts, music, culture, sport, food, language and humour, bringing invaluable contributions to the UK’s educational and cultural landscape.

Building global connections

Looking ahead, the UK government is also looking at strengthening education partnerships worldwide. The opening up of opportunities to the world means space for you to be a part of what’s coming, as you’ll bring to the table both your education and skills as an international student in the UK and your cultural and life experiences from your home country.

"Education must be at the forefront of tackling the major global challenges of our time," Phillipson stated. By fostering international collaboration in education, the UK aims to continue delivering global academic excellence and spurring innovation.

She envisioned UK universities delivering courses across borders and dealing with world challenges, from artificial intelligence and climate change to poverty and misinformation.
