Understanding the CGPA Grading System

主題包含

Know all about CGPA used in the Indian education system

What is CGPA?

Cumulative Grade Point Average (CGPA) is basically an average of all the accumulated grade points that you have achieved based on your performance in school or college. This ratio quantity is calculated up to two decimal places. CGPA calculation is done by adding up the grades of all the subjects and dividing it by the total number of subjects.

Origin of CGPA

The grading system was invented by William Farish, a professor at Cambridge University, England in 1972. He introduced CGPA as he wanted to understand his students' minds and make sure they grasp what is taught to them and help assess their performance.

Fun fact: Before its introduction to the education system the grading system was initially used in factories to rate the manufactured product quality.

Benefits of the CGPA system

Your performance mapped through grades play a crucial role in seeking academic opportunities in foreign colleges and universities. Let’s see how CGPA benefits your performance individually:

  1. Identify your weaknesses and strengths: This method not only simplifies the grading system but also helps you recognise your weakness and work on them. It also helps you enhance your strength to move a step ahead.

  2. Reduces pressure: It reduces the burden of getting high marks from your shoulder as the report card doesn’t show the actual marks but grades. You will only focus on getting good grades.

  3. Modern pattern of grading: With the CGPA system in place your grades will not solely depend on academic performance but on assignments, attendance, achievements, etc.

  4. Simplified study pattern: As the focus is shifted from achieving marks to performing other activities, you will find it easier to get to your goal of getting good grades by performing in other spheres as well.

  5. Promotes comprehensive method of teaching: CGPA is a good identifier of weak, average, and bright students. It also enables teachers to work and pay more attention to the weak and average students in the class.

Difference between GPA and CGPA

GPA (Grade point average)

CGPA (Cumulative grade point average)

Use to calculate the performance of the student in a single unit or a semester

Use to calculate the performance of students in all semesters or units

GPA = Total Points earned divided by Total Credits Attempted

CGPA = Sum of (credit x GPA) of all semesters divided by the total no of credits in all the semesters

How to convert CGPA to percentage

Implement the following steps to convert CGPA to percentage:

  • Calculate the sum of grade points for all the subjects

  • Divide the sum of grade points by the total number of subjects. You’ll get your CGPA

  • Then multiply the CGPA by 9.5 to get the percentage equivalent

A 10-point scale is used by the Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE) to grade students.

As per the updated guidelines:

Subject-wise percentage = 9.5 * GPA of each subject

Overall percentage = 9.5 * CGPA

How to convert CGPA to marks

Now that you know how to convert CGPA to percentage, it’s easy to convert CGPA to marks. Here’s the formula to convert CGPA to marks:

CGPA X 9.5 (Sum of the maximum marks of each subject)
_______________________________________________
100

For example, if you got an 8 CGPA in 12th and the sum of maximum marks of each subject is 500, then your marks will be 8X9.5 (500)/ 100= 380. So, you got 380 marks in total.
