Learning in a different country is an excellent way to access some of the best schools in the world while immersing yourself in a fantastic new culture. However, choosing the right location to study in isn’t always easy.
You might be asking yourself, “Should I be learning in the UK? What about Australia, or New Zealand?”
Ultimately, there’s no one-size-fits-all option.
You’ll need to think about the yearly tuition fees that you’ll need to face, what kind of prestigious schools you can access in a region and even the costs of living in a specific city. Most importantly, you’ll need to know what kind of opportunities you’ll have access to in your chosen country. If you want to work abroad after graduation and gain experience to impress future employers, then it’s important to find a country that offers a great post-study work visa.
Working for a few years after you’ve obtained your degree in a foreign country makes a lot of sense. After all, you can start your career in an English-speaking country and develop a highly global experience. You’ll also be able to seamlessly transition from the immersive training sessions you had when getting your degree, into a familiar environment for work.
In some circumstances, the right post-study work visa can be the first step towards becoming a permanent resident of the country that hosted you during your education. Here are some of the most popular and safe countries that allow you to work abroad after graduation, plus the visa options that they offer.
1. Australia
Australia loves international students!
Students learning abroad in Australia can apply for a Temporary Graduate Visa, which allows you to stay in the country for between 2-4 years after you graduate. How long you can stay in the country after your education will depend on the kind of course that you did. If you have a bachelor’s or Master’s degree by coursework, then you can remain for 2 years. If you have a research master’s degree, you’ll be able to live in the country for 3 years, and if you have a Ph.D., you get to stay for four years!
Another impressive thing about Australia is that you can include family members on your application for a post-study work visa too!
2. UK
For a while, the UK wasn’t one of the best countries to work abroad in, because undergraduate and master’s degree students could only stay for up to 6 months after graduation. Even doctorate students only got a maximum of 1 year.
However, in 2019, the government announced a change in their post-study work visa that will allow international students graduating from a higher-education facility to stay in the UK for up to 2 years. You can also apply to stay for longer after this by getting an employer sponsorship scheme with a Tier 2 work visa.
3. New Zealand
New Zealand is another fantastic option for students that want access to a post-study work visa. Although you only get 12 months to stay in the country after graduation, there are plenty of opportunities to brand out into other visa routes too.
If you’re interested in hospitality and tourism, food and agriculture or animation, then you have a great chance of finding a job in New Zealand. Just keep in mind that the country has been tightening it’s rules around post study work visas lately.
4. Canada
International students who successfully graduate from a college or university in Canada can apply for the Post-Graduation Work Permit. This option allows students to remain in the country for a period of up to 3 years.
After graduating, international students will have six months to apply for their permit, and they can apply either from their own country or in Canada. The recently relaxed regulations in Canada are making the country one of the best countries for those who want to work abroad after graduation.
5. Ireland
Finally, Ireland offers a post-study work visa that lasts for up to 12 months for those earning a bachelor’s degree. On the other hand, if you’re studying for a post-graduate degree, then you can stay in the country for up to 24 months.
Degrees in Ireland are often very aligned to the needs of the economy, which makes many Irish graduates highly employable. You’ll have an easy time finding a job if you’re interested in applied sciences, IT, telecommunications, or pharmaceuticals.
If you’ve recently started planning your international education in a new country, and you want to make sure that you have a future after you graduate, it pays to look into post-study work visas.
