PhD Theology and Religion

We offer three different 'pure' research degrees, MA, MLitt, and PhD, and also two 'hybrid' research degrees which include a taught element, the DThM (Doctor of Theology and Ministry) and the Integrated PhD. 'Pure' research degrees are about research. You will be carrying out independent, supervised work towards your thesis from the very beginning of your studies. You will be supported and guided by an expert supervisory team throughout, and your progress will be assessed by a series of formal reviews during your studies. The sole requirement to complete the degree is to submit a thesis and pass a viva voce examination. (No viva is required for the MA by Research.)

For entry at MA level or for the Integrated PhD, you will normally be required to have a good honours degree (such as a First or a good 2:1/GPA 3.7 on a scale of 4.0) from a recognised institution, in Theology, Religious Studies or another relevant discipline. In addition to the bachelor degree requirement stated above, for entry at MLitt or PhD level you will normally be required to have a good MA degree (i.e. average above 65% or equivalent) in Theology or Religious Studies or another relevant discipline. Ielts - 7.0 with no component under 7.0, TOEFL iBT - 102 (with 27 writing and no other component under 25)
