Master of Science in Oceanography

Oceanography is a broad, multidisciplinary science that integrates the expertise and skills of ocean scientists with that of engineers. Florida Tech's master's in oceanography is a research-centric program that focuses on the study of:

Ocean currents and waves
Coastal processes
Planktonic, nektonic, and benthic ecology
Marine meteorology
Hydro-acoustic applications
Trace-metal pollution

Whether students want to develop a new way of restoring wetlands and shorelines, design solutions for managing the effects of pollution, or solve the mystery of Red Tides, a master's in oceanography from Florida Tech provides training in some of the most diverse marine environments in the world. This master's-degree program is available in both thesis-based and non-thesis options.

Students may be admitted during any semester, with rolling admissions allowing consideration for subsequent semesters. Students with deficiencies in their undergraduate preparation (up to 12 credit hours) may take deficiencies and courses for graduate credit concurrently.

It is preferred that applicants have an undergraduate major in one of the physical or life sciences with a background that includes computer science, mathematics through calculus and at least one year each of college biology, chemistry and physics. The biological background should include invertebrate zoology. ln special circumstances, applicants may be admitted from other discipline backgrounds, but deficiency courses in chemistry, mathematics, biology or other topics may be required by the graduate advisor.

English language proficiency:

Students whose home language is not English are considered to have demonstrated English language proficiency if they have accomplished any of the following: An Internet-based TOEFL (iBT) with an earned score of at least 79; or an IELTS with an earned score of at least 6.0; or a PTE Academic with an earned score of at least 58; or a Cambridge English: Advanced with an earned score of at least 180 (Grade of C); or a Duolingo English Test with an earned score of at least 100; ELS English for Academic Purposes level 112.
