Bachelor of Arts in Digital Design

The Digital Design degree is a liberal arts, generalized undergraduate program that provides exposure to the varied design fields in media and prepares students for employment or graduate study in a wide range of industries. Because the field is evolving and broad, exposure to the breadth of opportunities is an explicit objective, as is comprehensive education in the basic principles of visual design using computer technologies. Initial coursework emphasizes intellectual development of relevant principles of art and design, hand-eye coordination and development of student projects with both traditional, analog and digital tools.

The program progressively builds in complexity and provides opportunities for student-selected detailed investigation into areas of interest (e.g. game design, character design, interactive product design), or continued exploration in the breadth of opportunities.

It is an additional objective that students understand and be able to utilize a variety of applications and tools to be able to select the right one for the design problem at hand, and develop strategies for learning new tools and techniques in order to grow and learn when those change and evolve.

All first-year students who apply to NJIT must submit an official high school transcript. When evaluating your application for undergraduate admission, we are interested in understanding how you challenged yourself relative to the curriculum that was available at your school and the trends in your performancefor example, if your grades improved between your first-year and senior year.

We also consider the GPA that is indicated on your high school transcript. We generally look for students in the top 25% of their class. For schools that don't use a ranking system, we consider a 3.0 GPA or higher to be the equivalent.

Partaking in rigorous curricula, such as Advanced Placement (AP) or International Baccalaureate (IB) classes, can give you an additional advantage. The number of semester credits you will receive will depend on whether you earned a 3, 4, or 5 on your AP exams, or a grade of 5, 6, or 7 in IB subject areas. That score also determines which courses you will be exempt from taking at NJIT.
Our test-optional admissions policy was implemented in response to the scheduling challenges faced by many high school students taking the SAT and ACT tests due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

Students who have taken the SAT or ACT are encouraged to submit test scores to be considered for endowed scholarships where scores may be required. However, students who do not submit scores will be considered for other scholarships.
Personal Essay
Included in the Common Application is an essay. The purpose of the essay is to assess your writing ability and, more importantly, to learn more about you as an individual. This portion of the application helps us get to know you, assess mutual fit and better understand what you could contribute to NJIT.

Letter of Recommendation

Counselors and teachers provide an external perspective about you as a person and applicant to NJIT. We expect you to provide us with all information pertinent to your application, while your recommender will provide an additional perspective/insight about you as a student.
In general, high school students interested in any of the fields in the School of Art + Design should pursue a strong pre-college academic program that includes courses in the humanities, physics, and math (at least through pre-calculus for Bachelor of Science degree programs or those students applying for the undergraduate program in Interior Design with the intention of pursuing a graduate degree in Architecture). Additional experience and courses in traditional media art, art history, and computer graphics (as well as computer programming) are also helpful. A portfolio of creative work is required
The School of Art Plus Design requires students to submit a portfolio of creative work as part of the NJIT admissions process. The portfolio will be looked at as only one of a number of factors when evaluating a candidate for admission, and in some instances, a strong portfolio may make the difference between being offered a place in the class and not being offered admission.
