In REF 2021, 42 per cent of Newcastle's research was rated as world-leading and its overall research capacity improved by 65 per cent as a result of sustained excellence and growth.
Over the course of the REF cycle (2013-2020) the university grew its research income from GBP 93 million to GBP 109 million and contributed more than GBP 1 billion to the UK GDP, supporting 16,390 UK jobs.

Faculty of Science, Agriculture and Engineering: dating back to 1871 and now one of the largest science and engineering faculties in the UK.
Faculty of Medical Sciences: one of the UK's largest and most successful centres for research-led medical education.
These faculties organise and carry out research and teaching throughout the university. They are made up of academic schools, research institutes and research centres.
