Doctor of Philosophy in Art and Design Education

The art and design education doctoral program is for professionals who wish to study under internationally acclaimed instructors, experiencing a real-world art and design education. This program builds upon your current knowledge and prepares students to be researchers, scholars and leaders in the field of art and design education. The Ph.D. program emphasizes research, theory and philosophical development, and applications of new knowledge in art and visual culture. The Ph.D. prepares students to be researchers, scholars, and leaders in the field of art education, including education in K-12 schools, colleges and universities, museums and community art centers, and other cultural institutions.

A student seeking admission to the Ph.D. program in Art Education in the School of Art and Design must meet all requirements for admission to the Graduate School and have satisfied the requirements (or equivalent) for the M.S., M.A., or M.F.A. degree in Art at NIU. An applicant whose native language is not English must present an IELTS score of 6.5 or alternatively, a TOEFL score of at least 80 on the TOELF ibt. Normally, to be considered for admission, a non-U.S. citizen shall have completed a four-year undergraduate degree. A minimum 2.75 overall GPA on a 4.00 system or a 3.20 GPA with 15 or more semester hours of graduate work at an accredited institution.
