Doctor of Philosophy in Public Health Sciences

he Department of Public Health Sciences has broadened its PhD program to include all areas of research expertise represented in our faculty including, but not limited to, epidemiology, biostatistics, qualitative, mixed- and community-based methods, the use of health and public-health services, program evaluation, clinical epidemiology, health equity, global health, indigenous health, and health economics.

Our programs place an emphasis on close faculty-student relations and a philosophy that puts the student first. Through coursework, thesis opportunities, and involvement in the academic life of our department, our students graduate with an in-depth understanding of public health research. Our graduates are able to function as independent investigators in academic, health-research institutes and health-research government agencies, or as emerging public-health leaders in government or the private sector.

In the coming year, our PhD program in the Department of Public Health Sciences at Queen's University has a number of exciting opportunities for qualified applicants. The following members of our department have each expressed an interest in supervising a new PhD student.

Admission requirements for these programs are:

a minimum A- average (equivalent GPA of 3.7 or 80%) in a Master's degree program in a related discipline such as, but not limited to, health sciences, epidemiology, biostatistics, statistics, health promotion, health geography, or economics.
a minimum A- average (equivalent GPA of 3.7 or 80%) in the last 20 post-secondary courses.
demonstrated research competency and potential, which is normally achieved via a thesis-based, or a research-project based Master's degree.
Applicants who have not completed a thesis or research project will be considered on a case-by-case basis. In these cases applicants should show evidence of interest in research, and experience including relevant coursework, publications and/or work experience.
Applicants who express an interest in our Specialization Field of Epidemiology should have Master's level training or equivalent in Epidemiology. Students who are interested in this specialization but who do not have the appropriate academic background should contact the Department to discuss options.
Applicants who express an interest in our Specialization Field of Biostatistics should have Master's level training or equivalent in Biostatistics. Students who are interested in this specialization but who do not have the appropriate academic background should contact the Department to discuss options.
Two academic letters of recommendation. Normally one of these would be from your MSc thesis supervisor. If you have been out of university for more than five years, one or more professional recommendations may be included. Referees will receive an email from the School of Graduate Studies requesting their letter.
Prior to submitting your online application, you will be given the opportunity to upload your transcripts and any other documentation. If you are accepted into the program, you will need to arrange for two official hard-copy transcripts from all post-secondary institutions attended to be sent to the School of Graduate Studies, Queen's University, Gordon Hall Room 425, 74 Union Street, Kingston, Ontario, Canada, K7L 3N6. Transcripts must be sent by the issuing institutions directly to the School of Graduate Studies.
A Curriculum Vitae (emailed to the Graduate Assistant).
A one-page outline of an initial, potential plan for doctoral research (emailed to the Graduate Assistant).
A Graduate Records Examination (GRE) is a mandatory requirement for applicants with degrees from non-Canadian universities and a minimum score of 149 is required on the quantitative section. There are no exceptions to this rule. The Admissions Committee also considers the applicant's ranking on the analytic writing and verbal reasoning sections. The GRE institution code and department code is 0949 and 0606, respectively.
Proof of English Language Comprehension is a mandatory requirement for International students from a non-English speaking university or students with English as a second language will need to complete a TOEFL assessment. Applicants must have an overall minimum score of 88 (out of 120) along with the following scores: writing 24, speaking 22, reading 22 and listening 20.
