What to expect:
Podiatrists diagnose and manage a wide range of foot and related lower limb conditions to help improve mobility and quality of life in people of all ages. As a training podiatrist, you will provide foot health care to diverse clients utilising podiatry surgical procedures, musculoskeletal and gait assessments, orthoses and exercise prescription, wound care and foot health education. Commonly, patients present with conditions that may include foot pain, sports injuries, footwear problems, skin or nail problems. Podiatrists often work alongside other health professionals to deliver the best overall care for a patient with chronic disease such as diabetes or rheumatoid arthritis.
Work Integrated Learning:
During this course, your training will include approximately 900 hours of clinical placement.
Honours pathway:
At the end of the second year of study in this course you will have the option to apply for the Bachelor of Podiatry (Honours). This allows you to complete an honours research project that extends your knowledge of the professional field, offering a competitive advantage in your career. Entry to the program is competitive and based on grade point average. On entry to the honours pathway you will retain all of the credit you have successfully completed in the Bachelor of Podiatry and will complete a further two years of full-time study.Careers and outcomes:
Your degree in podiatry can lead to working in a diverse range of setting, including hospitals, private practice, sole practitioner or multi-disciplinary settings. Opportunities to further specialise include diabetes, paediatrics, forensics, sports podiatry, podiatric surgery, prescribing medicines and clinical research.Professional recognition:
This course is accredited under the Australian Health Practitioner Regulation Agency. Graduates are eligible to apply for registration with the Podiatry Board of Australia, and may also choose to join other professional peak bodies such as the Australian Podiatry Association and Sports Medicine Australia.With additional postgraduate training, podiatrists can apply to the Podiatry Board of Australia and seek endorsement to prescribe scheduled medicines.
