(MD- Phd) Medical Scientist Training Program

The University of Chicago Medical Scientist Training Program (MSTP) was established in 1967 and is one of the longest running physician-scientist training programs in the country. The program is designed for students who seek careers in biomedical research and have a desire to apply both clinical and research expertise to solve the most pressing problems in medical science. The program has an illustrious history of training students to assume positions of leadership in academic medicine at major research institutions nationwide. MeSH students typically begin their studies with their first two years of graduate school. Following that, they complete 1-3 years of medical school before returning to graduate school to complete their PhD. After they complete their PhD, they return to medical school to finish their medical training. This sequence allows MeSH students to complete their graduate training efficiently while minimizing long breaks in their medical training.

The Medical Scientist Training Program seeks students with strong academic records and a commitment to biomedical investigation. Successful applicants generally have extensive research experience and strong letters of recommendation indicating their interest and potential in basic science research.

Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL). The minimum score for admission to the BSD is 104 overall with subscores of 26 each.
International English Language Testing System (IELTS) - Please note: only the Academic Reading/Writing test, not the General Training Reading/Writing test, is acceptable. The minimum score for admission to the BSD is 7 overall with subscores of 7 each.
