Doctor of Philosophy in East Asian languages and Literatures - Korean Literature

The Ph.D. degree in East Asian Languages & Literatures aims to train future scholars for the academic profession. The Ph.D. specialization in Korean language/linguistics offers students the opportunity to develop scholarly expertise in Korean historical linguistics, phonology, morphology, syntax, semantics, sociolinguistics, and/or language pedagogy.

The GRE is optional, but we strongly encourage PhD applicants to submit their GRE scores. The Educational Testing Service (ETS) code for UHM is 4867.

A master's degree with a GPA of 3.0 or better
The departmental minimum for the TOEFL score is 600/100 (paper/internet). The department minimum for the IELTS score is 7.00.
Transcripts: One transcript is required from each post-secondary institution attended, including any study abroad or exchange programs, summer programs, and non-degree work and extension programs.
