To complete a postgraduate research programme, youll need to be dedicated and passionate about your area of study. But itll be well worth it. Being a doctoral student is challenging, yet incredibly rewarding. You are expected to carry out a programme of research in a particular area under the supervision of a primary supervisor and one or more co-supervisors. A PhD is the most internationally recognised research qualification, and is the most commonly pursued research degree at Leeds. Typically, throughout your PhD you will undertake research in different stages across years one, two and three. However, your research degree may be longer depending on the project you have chosen.

We use mathematical modelling as a tool for simulation of the behaviour of materials, processes and systems plays a significant role in contemporary science and research. Its potential for developing methods for numerical design and prediction of phenomena in physico-chemical and biological systems increases with the continuously increasing computer power, data storage and improved visualisation approaches. Mathematical models can be used as simulators of new processes and materials, providing ways for the efficient optimisation of their parameters. Such techniques can also be used for control and decision making at different levels from physical performance to strategy building. The use of mathematical models to predict process behaviour and material properties responds to the increasing demand for digitalisation of the economy.

You must have achieved a bachelor degree with a 2:1 (hons), or equivalent, or a good performance in a Masters level course in a relevant subject. We also recognise relevant industrial and academic experience.

The minimum University language requirement is IELTS band score 6.0 - with not less than 5.5 in any skill area or Internet based TOEFL 87 (with not less than 20 in listening, 20 in reading, 22 in speaking and 21 in writing).
