PhD in River Basin Processes and Management - Geomorphology

To complete a postgraduate research programme, youll need to be dedicated and passionate about your area of study. But itll be well worth it. Being a doctoral student is challenging, but incredibly rewarding. To do a PhD, youll usually need to dedicate 3 years full-time or 5 years part-time, during which youll be generating new knowledge and considering that new information in relation to existing information. Youll carry out a programme of research under the supervision of a primary supervisor and one or more co-supervisors, have the chance to strengthen your research skills and knowledge and develop a really wide range of qualities. Our research in geomorphology spans soil erosion, hillslope and river sediment flux, peatland processes and 3D landscape evolution modelling. We predominantly work in upland environments in the UK and arctic/alpine river catchments worldwide. Upland and alpine environments are vulnerable to climate change and under pressure from intensive human activity, such as land management practices and water resource management. However, these environments also offer important ecosystems services and can be impacted by severe natural hazards. They are a target environment for natural flood management practices.

The minimum entry requirements for PhD study is 2.1 honours degree, or equivalent, in geography or a related subject however a lower undergraduate degree can be supplemented by a relevant Masters degree. A first class honours degree (or equivalent) is usually required to be competitive for scholarship funding and a Masters degree is also a valuable asset.

IELTS- 6.0 overall with at least 5.5 in all components.
TOEFL IBT (Internet-based TOEFL)- 87 with a minimum score of 20 in listening and reading, 21 in writing and 22 in speaking.
