Established in 1819, University of Virginia is a public university designed to advance human knowledge, educate leaders, and cultivate an informed citizenry. The university is made up of eleven schools in Charlottesville and the College at Wise in Southwest Virginia.

The university maintains a combined 17 courts, and fields and recreation centres that include artificial turf surfaces for team sports, state-of-the-art gym and weight facilities, two pools and a climbing wall. It also has more than 700 clubs and organizations.
