Master of Arts in International and Development Economics/Master of Environmental Science

In 1984, the faculties of the Economics Department and of the School of the Environment recognized the value of integrating instruction in economic development and in natural resources and formalized a degree program that, in two and one-half years, leads to both the Master of Arts degree in Economics and one of four degrees from the School of the Environment. The program is designed for individuals who envision careers whose central missions relate natural resource or environmental issues to economic development or trade. The Master of Environmental Science and Master of Forest Science programs are designed for students wishing to conduct scientific research that contributes basic and applied knowledge. These highly individualized two-year degrees offer a deeper disciplinary focus on forest-related topics (MFS) or other environmental issues (MESc) through formalized training in the philosophy and practice of science. Training is provided through key courses in combination with extended research. Students in the MFS/MESc programs have the opportunity to develop critical research skills, pursue self-directed research, learn and practice grant-seeking strategies, and create a publication-ready master's thesis to be presented to the broader Yale community.

All entering students must have obtained a bachelor's degree or its international equivalent prior to enrolling at the Graduate School. A student may submit an application before receiving the degree, or while their degree is still in progress, so long as the degree will be completed prior to matriculation.In some countries, an undergraduate or bachelor's equivalent degree is completed in three years. In such cases, the completion of a three-year bachelor's equivalent degree is sufficient to meet the application requirement.
