With world-renowned universities, a vibrant cultural landscape, and endless opportunities, it's no wonder that countless students dream of pursuing their education in the United States. However, the US student visa process can be a complex maze of regulations and requirements.

This guide will help you navigate the process. Ready to embark on this journey? Let's dive in!

2025 US student visa updates

The US student visa landscape changes with needs and policies, with recent updates aimed at streamlining processes and enhancing security. The United States Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS) states that these changes are necessary to cover operational costs and modernise its infrastructure. Here are the two key changes:

Tighter scrutiny for student visas

F, M, and J student visa applicants must now provide accurate passport information when scheduling their appointments. This change aims to streamline the visa appointment system, enhance data accuracy, and prevent scheduling errors, ensuring a smoother application process.

Impact on practical training opportunities for international students

The changes also have implications for Practical Training opportunities available to international students in the US.

  • Optional Practical Training (OPT) for F-1 students: Students on F-1 visas can engage in OPT, which has two distinct periods: Pre-Completion and Post-Completion. Pre-Completion OPT allows for part-time work experience while studying, while Post-Completion OPT grants up to 12 months of work authorisation after graduation.

  • Curricular Practical Training (CPT): CPT provides F-1 students with full-time work opportunities directly related to their curriculum, bridging the gap between classroom learning and real-world application.

  • Practical Training (PT) for M-1 students: M-1 students enrolled in vocational programmes can access PT after completing their studies. The duration of PT eligibility is based on the length of their programme.

Before the changes (prior to April 1, 2024)

  • STEM OPT extension: F-1 students were eligible for a 24-month extension of their post-completion OPT period.

  • Employer requirements: To qualify for the STEM OPT extension, students had to be employed by an E-Verify participating employer.

  • Reporting requirements: STEM OPT students were required to report to their Designated School Official (DSO) every 6 months.

After the changes (as of April 1, 2024)

  • STEM OPT extension: The 24-month STEM OPT extension remains in place.

  • Employer requirements: The E-Verify requirement has been eliminated. However, employers must still provide formal training and learning objectives for STEM OPT students.

  • Reporting requirements: The reporting frequency has been reduced to annually.

  • Unemployment allowance: The total unemployment allowance for the combined post-completion OPT and STEM OPT extension periods has been increased from 150 days to 180 days.

  • Fees: The STEM OPT extension application fee has been increased slightly.

Types of US student visas

Let's explore the available US student visa options. Knowingwhich visa is required to study in the USA depends on your chosen course and the duration of your study programme.

F-1 visa: what is an F-1 visa?

The F-1 visa is the most common type of student visa, designed for individuals pursuing academic studies at a US college or university, or an English language programme. To be eligible, you need to be enrolled full-time in a Student and Exchange Visitor Program (SEVP)-certified institution. The F-1 visa typically allows you to stay in the US for the duration of your academic programme, plus an additional period for OPT. The F-1 visa processing time can vary, so it's best to apply well in advance of your intended start date.

M-1 visa

If you're interested in vocational or non-academic training, such as a technical or culinary programme, the M-1 visa is the right choice for you. Like the F-1 visa, you must enrol in an SEVP-certified institution. However, the M-1 visa has a shorter duration, usually limited to the length of your programme, with some exceptions for practical training.

J-1 visa

The J-1 visa is for individuals participating in exchange visitor programmes, such as research scholars, au pairs, and camp counsellors. These programmes offer a unique opportunity to experience American culture and gain practical experience in your field of study.

US student visa requirements

To apply for a student visa, you must first apply and be accepted by an institution in the USA that is certified by the Student and Exchange Visitor Program (SEVP). Once accepted, you will receive a Form I-20 from the institution's international student office, which is a paper record of your information in the database called the Student and Exchange Visitor Information System (SEVIS).

You will need the following documentation for your visa application:

  • A current passport that is valid for at least six months beyond your period of stay in the USA (unless exempt by country-specific agreements)

  • Acceptance at a SEVP-approved school and your Form I-20

  • Application fee payment for the Student and Exchange Visitor Information System (SEVIS)

  • Non-immigrant visa application and the Form DS-160 confirmation page

  • One or two photographs in the requested format.

General US student visa application steps

Here are the general steps involved in applying for a US student visa:

1. Acceptance to a SEVP-approved school

The first step is to secure admission to a Student and Exchange Visitor Program (SEVP)-approved school in the US. SEVP certification ensures that the institution meets specific standards for international student enrolment. Once you're accepted, the school will issue you a Form I-20 for your visa application.

2. Pay the SEVIS fee

The Student and Exchange Visitor Information System (SEVIS) fee is mandatory for all F, M, and J visa applicants. You can pay this fee online through the official SEVIS website. The cost of a student visa in the USA also includes this SEVIS fee in addition to the visa application fee itself, so be sure to keep the receipt, as you'll need it for your visa interview.

3. Complete Form DS-160

Form DS-160 is the online non-immigrant visa application. It's a lengthy and detailed form, so be prepared to provide extensive information about yourself, your education, your finances, and your travel plans. Accuracy is crucial, as discrepancies can delay or even jeopardise your application.

4. Schedule and attend your visa interview

The visa interview is a critical step in the application process. You'll meet with a consular officer to assess your US student visa eligibility. Be prepared to answer questions about your study plans, financial resources, and ties to your home country. Practise your answers beforehand and dress professionally for the interview.

5. Gather additional documents

In addition to the DS-160 form, you'll need to submit several supporting documents, including your passport, academic transcripts, financial evidence, and a letter of acceptance from your SEVP-approved school. The student visa requirements for the USA may vary depending on your country of origin, so check the US embassy or consulate website for detailed information.

6. Country-specific requirements

Some countries may have additional visa application requirements or procedures. It's essential to research these specific requirements well in advance to ensure you have ample time to gather all necessary documentation.

When you receive your visa, you must ensure that you:

  • Do not enter the USA more than 30 days before your study programme begins.

  • Contact your designated school official (DSO) when you first enter the USA.

  • Contact your DSO again no later than the programme start date listed on your Form I-20.

  • Make sure your visa remains valid by fulfilling the purpose for which it was issued and following all associated regulations.

While studying in the USA on a student visa, you must:

  • Attend and pass all of your classes. If you are finding your studies too difficult, you should speak with your DSO immediately.

  • Talk to your DSO about requesting a possible program extension if you think you will be unable to complete your programme by the end date listed on your Form I-20.

  • Take a full course of study each term. If you cannot study full-time, contact your DSO immediately.

  • Not drop a full course of study without consulting with your DSO.

Financial considerations

Studying in the US comes with a financial commitment. You need to demonstrate to the consular officer that you have sufficient funds to cover your tuition fees and living expenses for the duration of your stay.

This financial evidence can take various forms, such as bank statements, scholarship letters, or affidavits of support from sponsors. It's essential to have these documents readily available and ensure they clearly demonstrate your financial capability.

Scholarships and financial aid can help offset the cost of studying in the US. Research scholarship opportunities offered by universities, external organisations, or even your home country's government. IDP's resources on scholarships and financial aid can be a valuable starting point in your search.

While studying in the US on an F-1 visa, you're generally allowed to work on-campus for up to 20 hours per week during the academic year and full-time during breaks. Off-campus work is typically restricted and requires specific authorisation. Be sure to familiarise yourself with the regulations governing student employment to avoid any complications.

Tips for a successful visa application

Securing a US student visa requires meticulous planning and preparation. Here are some tips to help you navigate the process and increase your chances of success.

  • Start early: The visa application process can take several weeks or even months, especially during peak seasons. It's crucial to start early and allow ample time to gather documents, schedule your interview, and process your application.

  • Be honest and transparent: Any deception or misrepresentation in your application can lead to a visa denial and potentially even a permanent ban on future applications. Always provide truthful and accurate information, and be prepared to answer any questions the consular officer may have.

  • Practise your interview answers: The visa interview can be nerve-wracking, but preparation is key. Practise answering common interview questions with a friend, family member, or IDP counsellor. This will help you feel more confident and articulate better on the day of your interview.

  • Dress professionally: First impressions matter. Dress professionally and respectfully for your visa interview. This shows the consular officer that you're serious about your studies and value the opportunity to study in the US.

  • Demonstrate strong ties to your home country: One of the key factors in visa approval is demonstrating that you have strong ties to your home country and intend to return after completing your studies. Be prepared to discuss your family, career plans, and other factors that demonstrate your connection to your home country.

  • Don't overlook your English skills: Even if you're confident in your English abilities, remember that meeting the minimum language requirements for your chosen study programme is essential. Be prepared to provide evidence of your English proficiency when applying to a SEVP-certified school, such as IELTS or TOEFL scores.

Common US student visa mistakes to avoid

Even with meticulous preparation, some common pitfalls can derail your US student visa application. Let's identify these mistakes and discover how to steer clear of them.

  • Insufficient financial proof: One of the most frequent reasons for visa rejection is the inability to demonstrate sufficient funds to cover tuition and living expenses. Make sure you gather all necessary financial documents and indicate that you have the means to support yourself during your studies in the US.

  • Incomplete applications: Submitting an incomplete application is a surefire way to delay or even derail your visa process. Double-check every section of your application, ensure all required fields are filled out accurately, and attach all supporting documents before submitting.

  • Lack of ties to your home country: The consular officer needs to be convinced that you intend to return to your home country after completing your studies. Clearly articulate your plans for the future, highlighting your ties to your home country, such as family, career prospects, or property ownership.
