Become an Early Childhood Teacher, explore a rewarding career in high demand

Not only does the job offer a stimulating and rewarding career, but it gives you a pathway to permanent residency in Australia. All teaching roles are on the medium and long term shortage list, opening the door to an education and future in Australia. This article explores how to become an early Childhood Teacher & the process of applying for permanent residency in each state.

Most of us can remember a teacher we looked up to, a teacher who became a mentor or role model and inspired us to explore our passions and interests. Teachers are in a unique position with close contact to the younger generation; they can shape and impact people’s lives. This is a rewarding and noble career, however also requires patience and a caring personality.

If you’re interested in securing permanent residency in Australia, becoming a teacher is a stable pathway. Read our article to know the steps to follow, depending on which state you live in.

The Early Childhood (Pre-primary School) Teacher is on the Medium and Long-term Strategic Skills List (MLTSSL), under these Visas: 189/190/491/482/186/494/407.

You will need to complete:

  • Minimum of four years university level study that results in qualification/s, this must include a teacher education qualification

  • At least one year full-time (or part-time equivalent) higher education (university) level study of Early Childhood (Pre-primary School) Teacher initial teacher education

  • At least 45 days of supervised teaching practice with students across the Birth to 8 years age range in education programs prior to and in the early years of primary school. This teaching practice will be an invaluable experience, helping you feel confident to step into the classroom upon graduation.

State nomination – Victoria

  • Victoria is an easier place to be nominated as a Teacher, in comparison to other states

  • There is a workforce skills pathway which makes it easier to be nominated for a 190 visa as an Early Childhood Teacher in Victoria.

  • Luckily for those in Victoria, there is no minimum experience and hours of work requirement. Casual employment will be accepted

State nomination – New South Wales

NSW 190

  • To follow the state nomination in NSW under the Visa 190, you will need to make an expression of interest with SkillSelect

  • You need to have resided in NSW for at least 3 months or be employed in the occupation of Teacher in NSW

NSW 491

You will need to make an expression of interest with SkillSelect and register your interest for NSW nomination. ECT is an occupation on the NSW state list. You will have the below 3 options:

  • STREAM 1: Live and work in a regional area for at least 12 months and hold a valid skills assessment that appears on stream 1 occupation list; or

  • STREAM 2: Hold a valid skills assessment for an occupation that appears on your preferred region's occupation list and have completed study in the past 24 months which can meet the Australian study requirement and relate to your occupation; or

  • STREAM 3: Hold a valid skills assessment for an occupation that appears on your preferred region's occupation list and residing in Australia.

State nomination – South Australia

Early Childhood teacher is an occupation on the SA list, and you can apply via expression of interest. You can apply for nomination after you have met the following requirement.

You will need a high GPA 5-5.99 or 3 months of work experience

If you graduated in a non SA state, you will need 6 months of work experience or to secure 95 points

190 nomination

You will require 3 months of work experience

12 months of work experience in Greater Adelaide is required or 6 months of work experience in regional SA

State nomination – Tasmania

You need to make an expression of interest with SkillSelect. If you have not studied in TAS, you must have an occupation on the TSOL list, including the occupation of Early Childhood teacher.

Check out the below table for work and study requirements if you graduated in Tasmania or another states.

Note the employment means 35 hours/week, and can be multiple jobs.

You can apply for nomination after you have met the following requirement.

There is no mandatory work requirement

3 month TSOL employment + proficient English or 6 months of employment

There is no mandatory work requirement

6 months TSOL employment + proficient English

State Nomination – Northern Territory

Early childhood (pre‑primary school) teacher is an occupation listed on the NT list

To be eligible, you need to have:

  • Successfully completed a two-year single tertiary course or a set of nested tertiary courses in the NT

And;

  • Lived in the Northern Territory for at least 6 months after graduation while holding full work right visa (500 visa cannot be counted as full work right visa regardless the hour permitted)

  • Employment is not mandatory if you’re a NT Graduate

Once you have met the above requirement, you need to submit your nomination application to the NT government.

*other states graduates may not go to NT for 190 nominations unless willing to study 2 year degree and have yet used the Visa 485.

State Nomination – Western Australia

To follow the Graduate stream pathway, you need to

  • Have a WA qualification

  • Meet the EOI requirement

  • Have proficient English

  • Have relevant skills assessment

  • Have an occupation on the WA graduate occupation list

  • Have completed 6 months of work experience (minimum of 20 hrs per week) or have a job offer (minimum of 6 months, 35 hrs per week)

General stream pathway (You don’t need to have studied in WA)

  • Under Sche1 occupation list, you need to have skills assessment, proficient English and 1 year of work experience

  • Under Sche2 occupation list, you need to have skills assessment, proficient English and a job offer (minimum of 1 year of full-time work, 35hr per week).

State Nomination – Queensland

Graduate pathway

GPA average of 6.0+English 7+3months work experience + job offer

Studied at the PHD level

Skilled workers pathway

Expression of interest with 65+ points, English IELTS level of 7, 3 months work experience and a job offer

Expression of interest with 80+ points, English IELTS level of 7+ , 6 months work experience and a job offer

*Note, the Graduate pathway work experience, and job offer requires minimum of 20 hours per week

*Note, skilled workers pathway work experience and job offer requires minimum of 35 hours per week

State nomination – Australian Capital Territory (ACT)

State nomination is based on a matrix point system. You need to apply for the nomination after you have applied for EOI.

  • Early Childhood (Pre-primary School) Teacher (241111) is an occupation on the ACT critical list.

  • 482/457 visa holders who has been sponsored by ACT employers or small business owners can also follow a pathway to permanent residency

  • Skill level for this occupation requires proficient English (ECT is skill lv1)
