I took a gap year after graduating high school to figure out what I wanted to study. It was an important decision, and I wanted to ensure I looked at all my cards. Eventually, I told myself that I wanted to study film production. But the problem with that was that there weren't many universities offering film courses in Malaysia. While searching for a potential university, my mum suggested Australia. Growing up, my mum has always wanted me to experience different cultures. She believes you can be a better version of yourself by learning and exploring the world that we live in. Furthermore, Australia is only a 6-hour flight from Malaysia, so visiting wouldn't be much of a hassle.
My mum and I didn't know where to start applying for a visa and university in Australia until someone we knew suggested IDP. We booked an appointment at the nearest IDP branch and went in for our consultation. The counselor that we talked to was very friendly and helpful. She explained the entire process very clearly and helped us narrow down the right university for me - North Metropolitan TAFE. I am happy to say that everything went smoothly after our initial meeting.
I was fortunate to have relatives in Australia to help me get the essentials when I first arrived in Australia. I think my biggest challenge was adjusting myself to my new environment. Everything was quite different from what I was used to, and it definitely took me a while to get used to my new home. It wasn't until after spending some time with my new friends that I found a place in Australia.
I'm planning on applying for a temporary visa after completing my degree. I want to gain real work experience in content production here in Australia. The country has a lot to offer due to its vibrant and diverse culture. I believe spending extra time here will benefit me in the future and my career in the creative industry.
It may seem scary and imitating at first, but if you put yourself out there and put enough effort into it. I can reassure you that you won't regret it. The people you meet and the things you experience in Australia will stay with you forever. I found a quote that best befits what I am trying to say; "Life is meant to be experienced. Put yourself out there. Do things you've never done. Live a life where at the end, you will have no regrets."
