Lighting designer: Salary range from AU$60,000 to $80,000
Product or furniture designer: Salary range from AU$60,000 to $90,000
In Australia, there’s a real focus on creating designs that honour culture and incorporate elements of history. This makes a unique basis from which to learn, with ethical and inclusive elements.
It’s a growing industry too, with a forecast growth of 19% by 2026. This reflects the increase in the global luxury market and changing values. Work environments are being made more inclusive and sympathetic to human comfort by means such as lighting. Flexible workforces need home offices too, as our working lives change. Companies are spending more money on high-end designs that build exposure and brand reputation.
It's also a way to find permanent residency in Australia. As interior designers are on the skills shortage list, there are visa options that take you from student to resident.
First, you’ll be on the Student Visa (500). Once you’ve completed your studies, you can transition to the 485 Temporary Graduate Visa. This temporary visa allows you to live and work in Australia until you find full time employment in your field.
ANZSCO 232511 interior designer is on a short term skills shortage list. This gives you a few options for provisional visas:
482 - Temporary Skill Shortage visa- short term up to two years
494 - Skilled Employer Sponsored Regional - provisional up to five years, employer sponsored stream
491 - Skilled Work Regional - provisional up to five years, visa State or Territory nominated
You will need to provide evidence of your qualification, and you may be required to perform a skills assessment with VETASSESS. Once successful in gaining employment in Australia, after completing the required years of working, you may be eligible to apply for a permanent visa type.
There are a range of options if you’re wanting to gain an interior design qualification and start your career.
Re-imagine interior spaces during this three year, full time course from UTS. You’ll be taught how to develop spatial intelligence, explores creativity in the design process, while being underpinned by function and engagement.
Transform your life as well as interiors, with this two year masters degree from RMIT. Once you’ve completed an appropriate bachelor degree, this course allows you to specialise in your chosen interior design practices. There’s a focus on collaboration, and use of design to facilitate social and cultural change.
This 18 month course at Swinburne gives a broad set of skills that apply to retail, domestic, and exhibition spaces, as well as objects like fittings and furniture. The basics of illustration, design process, and drafting will set you up for further studies, or an entry level role to start your career.
This four year, full time course at Queensland University of Technology gives you the skills and knowledge needed to explore the boundaries of design. It focuses on creating functional spaces that are visually appealing. Past graduates are consistently recognised at the Design Institute of Australia’s awards. With over 100 hours of work placements and an overseas study tour, the real-world focus allows graduates to start their career with confidence.
This three-year course at TAFE WA gets you the career start you want. With all the basic interior design skills and theory covered, you’ll learn the latest interior design theories, principles and practices. Adapt global design trends to suit local needs and incorporate cutting edge technical innovations.
