Your visa has arrived, the ticket is booked, and you are all set to study abroad in Australia. It’s finally time to pack! And here’s a brief packing guide to help you steer clear of luggage troubles when traveling to study in Australia.

When traveling to study in Australia, packing smartly is the best way to ensure a smooth flight. Getting a chance to study abroad can be pretty exciting, and it’s only natural to get carried away when packing your bags for a long-term stay in Australia. In this packing guide, we have listed some dos and don’ts for students packing for Australia.

Check the luggage details on your ticket

It’s a good time to start packing when you are traveling documents are in order, and your seat on the flight has been reserved. But before emptying your belongings into the bag, it’s best to check the luggage details on your ticket reservation or the website of the airlines. Each airline allows a specific amount of check-in and hand-carry luggage. Make sure you have read the guidelines given for people traveling to Australia.

We would highly recommend that you weigh your luggage at home and ensure that it is within the limit specified by the airline. Otherwise, the airline will have the right to charge you for excess luggage or ask you to leave some of your luggage behind.

Avoid keeping any sharp objects or liquids that exceed 100 ml quantity. If carrying medicines, keep a prescription from a certified health care professional along with you.

Avoid overpacking

You might wish to put wheels on the wardrobe to take with you, but it’s likely you’ll never use most of the things you’ll pack. Hence, over-packing is a big no-no! Remember, Australia is an entire continent, and you can buy almost everything from there if needed, so pack the essentials only!

Take climate-appropriate clothing

While the climate is variable due to the sheer size of the country, Australia usually experiences warm to extremely hot climate. Hence, filling your bags with heavy jackets would do you no good. Take clothes fit for summers, such as tank tops, shorts, t-shirts, and dresses. If the weather turns unexpectedly cold, you can always purchase warm clothes there. Not only will it be much more affordable, but it will also help you save the space in your luggage.

Carry cards and cash

Since you are going to study in Australia, you’ll be opening a bank account there. However, we recommend carrying the debit card from your home bank and inform the bank about your travel plans in advance. It would be best if you also kept some cash, about AUS $700, with you to cover most of your expenses. Don’t forget to get your currency bills converted into Australian dollars.

Keep essential documents

When traveling to study in Australia, you should remember to take all your essential documents with you. You can either carry them in your hand luggage or get them scanned and saved in your electronic device. Apart from your valid passport and student visa, you should also keep the document to prove that you have Overseas Student Health Care covered. Other essential documents include birth certificate, medical certificate, passport-sized photographs, academic transcripts and diplomas, test scores, official acceptance letter, and financial statements.

Do not travel with your pets

Even if you think your pet is extremely friendly and would give you a great company, you are not allowed to take them to Australia with you. Australia strictly regulates the animals which can enter the country to preserve their natural environment.
