Common Reasons for Canadian Visa Rejections and How to Try and Avoid Them

Here is something a lot of international students already know: Applying for a Canadian visa can be a stressful process because there are a lot of requirements. Whether you are applying for a study permit, work visa, or visitor visa, the immigration system has strict guidelines designed to make sure only eligible applicants are granted the right to enter. Unfortunately, this means some visas are rejected.

Have You Checked Your Documents Carefully? 

An incomplete or incorrect application will result in rejection. It is one of the most common reasons, and one of the most avoidable because double-checking your documents can make all the difference. Your documents need to prove your identity, why you intend to be in Canada, and how you intend to pay for your stay in the country. 

Going through the official visa checklist on the Canadian government’s website can reduce your chances of submitting inaccurate information. What you submit needs to be consistent, clear, readable, and in the form of original documents. Can You Support Yourself and Prove Your Intentions? 

Proof of financial support is critical because the Canadian government needs to know if an applicant has enough funds to cover tuition fees, living expenses, accommodation, or any other costs that may crop up. The onus is therefore on the applicant, to show that they have clear evidence of these funds, in the form of bank statements, affidavits of support, sponsorship letters, or any other proof of a stable financial history. There are minimum requirements based on the kind of visa being applied for, so every applicant should check to see what these figures are. For example, international students need to offer proof of funds equivalent to CAN$20,635 per year for a single applicant, not including tuition, while applying for a study permit. 

Applicants may also be asked to explain large deposits or unexpected changes in financial status. Some applicants are sponsored by parents or relatives, which they must prove with letters of sponsorship, relevant bank statements, and proof of income. 

As for proving one’s intention, visa applications are often rejected when officers suspect that applicants may not return to their home countries after their stay in Canada. Applicants need to provide evidence in the form of family commitments, proof of property ownership, stable job contracts, or anything else that shows they have reasons to return. It also helps to explain one’s purpose as clearly as possible, in the form of a cover letter or personal statement, where you can talk about why you want to visit Canada, what your trip is meant for, and why you are committed to returning when you are done. 

Do You Meet Health and Security Requirements? 

Many countries have strict health requirements for visitors, especially for long-term stays like students, and Canada is no exception. Applicants could have a medical condition that poses a risk to public health, which needs to be disclosed in an application to avoid rejection based on misrepresentation. Those planning to stay in Canada for more than six months may need to undergo a medical examination by an approved doctor. All required medical documents need to be submitted, with instructions followed carefully to avoid rejection. Applicants may also need to provide proof of health insurance. 

As for security, a criminal background or immigration violations will reduce a visa applicant’s chances of approval. These violations could include overstaying a visa or being deported from another country, which is why immigration authorities conduct background checks. Honesty is the best approach because failing to disclose such information could have serious long-term consequences.
