What is a Practical Nurse?

Officially known as a Licensed Practical Nurse (LPN) or a Registered Practical Nurse (RPN), a Practical Nurse is a healthcare professional providing support and care for people living with a variety of health-related issues. They typically work in care facilities, clinics, assisted living homes, and private residences.

Is a Practical Nurse a Registered Nurse?

No. An RPN and a Registered Nurse (RN) are different regulated job roles with different responsibilities, capabilities, training and credentials. It takes more time to become an RN, with most completing an undergraduate program and earning a Bachelor’s Degree specializing in Nursing. An RPN/LPN will typically complete a college-level program over 2 years, providing a different level of training.

Each province has specific requirements for RPN/LPN training programs. For example, in Ontario, the RPN training is based on the requirements set by the College of Nurses of Ontario (CNO) in their Practice Standards and Guidelines

What are the Admission Requirements for Practical Nursing Programs?

The exact requirements for Practical Nursing programs will vary between each school, even within the same province. Always check the precise admission requirements of the program you’re applying to. The following is a breakdown of typical requirements for international students:

  • Completion of Secondary School or High School or international equivalent.

  • Complete GMAT / GRE with a high percentile in the quantitative and verbal sections.

  • Pass an English proficiency test like the International English Language Testing System (IELTS)

  • Prepared academic transcripts, certifications, and other supporting documents.

  • CPR/First Aid certification

What are the Practical Nursing Requirements After Graduation?

Upon graduation, aspiring professionals must pass an exam created by the provincial regulatory body to become fully licensed and certified. For example, all graduates of Practical Nursing programs in Ontario and British Columbia are required to take the REx-PN Registration Exam to be fully accredited for work.
