If you are an aspiring international student interested in the UK as your study destination, there are a few things you need to know. The UK recently held its general election on 4 July, and a new Labour government has taken office. The new administration swiftly announced its support for international students and a commitment to a dynamic higher education sector. We are here to guide you through the key points and what this means for you.

What this means for you as an international student:

First and foremost, you will be welcomed in the UK as an international student. As a top study destination with 11 universities in the top 100 and 50 in the top 500 worldwide (THE), the UK offers both high-quality education and an exciting cultural life. You will become integral to this as you develop, grow and achieve your academic goals.

Furthermore, if you are interested in starting your working life in the UK after graduation, the UK Graduate Visa route remains unchanged and in place. You can stay in the UK for up to two years after completing your course or degree. According to the Association of Graduate Careers Advisory Service (AGCAS)* almost two-thirds of international graduates were in full-time or part-time employment upon completing their qualifications.

UK universities aim to support you and your aspirations. Dedicated staff, faculty, and fellow students provide a network to help you on your study journey and set you up for future success. In addition, the UK is home to organisations that look out for the interests of international students just like you, such as Universities UK International and the National Union of Students.

‘IDP will continue to collaborate with the new government and other sector stakeholders to ensure the UK remains a highly sought-after destination for international students. We extend our gratitude to these students, whose presence makes the UK more innovative and globally connected. At IDP, we will continue to champion their valuable contributions.’ Simon Emmett, CEO, IDP Connect

A clear statement was made by the new Secretary of State for Education, Bridget Phillipson

In a speech at the Embassy Education Conference at King’s College London, Bridget Phillipson underlined this saying:

“Be in no doubt: international students are welcome in the UK. This new government values their contribution – to our universities, to our communities, to our country.”

Phillipson emphasised the immense difference and contribution international students make to UK communities and society. However, she did not overlook the challenges and sacrifices made by international students. She commented:

“These people are brave. They move to a new culture, far away from their homes and their families. They take a leap of faith, hoping to develop new skills and chase new horizons. And I am enormously proud that so many want to take that leap here in the UK.”

The creativity and innovation that international students bring were also highlighted as critical for the UK. This contribution is something you could be part of.
