Florida State University was founded in 1851, one of the largest and oldest of the 12 institutions of higher learning in the State University System of Florida, had its beginning as early as 1823 when the Territorial Legislature began to plan a higher education system.
FSU preserves, expands, and disseminates knowledge in the sciences, technology, arts, humanities, and professions, while embracing a philosophy of learning strongly rooted in the traditions of the liberal arts. The university is dedicated to excellence in teaching, research, creative endeavors, and service. Florida State University is a comprehensive degree granting university, offering baccalaureate degrees in 106 programs, masters degrees in 113 programs, advanced mastersspecialist degrees in 14 programs, doctorates in 70 programs, and three professional degrees. The university offers fully accredited programs in both law (J.D.) and medicine (M.D.). Florida State University also offers a variety of study abroad opportunities for students during the regular academic year, as well as in special summer programs in Florence, Italy; Panama City, Republic of Panama; Valencia, Spain; and London, England.
The main campus is located on the oldest continuous site of higher education in Florida, in a community that fosters free inquiry and embraces diversity, along with championship athletics, and a prime location in the heart of the state capital. Degree programs are available at branch campuses in Panama City, Florida, and the Republic of Panama and off-campus instructional sites in Sarasota, New York, and the St. Petersburg College University Partnership Center in Seminole.
