Doctor of Philosophy in Industrial Engineering

For program and curriculum development, the Department of Industrial and Manufacturing Engineering utilizes two primary guiding principles:

Develop and maintaining a solid industrial engineering curriculum coupled with a strong research program driven by the economic needs of our society.
Advance the College of Engineering's missions relative to minorities and women in engineering.
The objectives of the graduate programs are to provide students with the knowledge, skills, tools and qualifications needed to successfully practice industrial engineering or to continue their education at the doctoral level. To accomplish these objectives, the program provides educational opportunities for students to become professionally responsible, creative problem-solvers and decision-makers in a world undergoing rapid change, both technologically and socially.

Specifically, the programs emphasize:

Acquisition of knowledge and understanding of appropriate fundamentals to ensure a solid foundation for the development of professional, technical and business competence. Development of skills necessary for integrating knowledge in order to produce efficient and economic solutions. Development of teamwork and written/oral communication skills. Development of, and practice in, computer-assisted problem solving. Cultivation of an understanding and awareness of the human role in all stages of professional activities.
Commitment to continuing professional growth for all parties associated with the Industrial and Manufacturing Engineering Department.

Candidates for admission to graduate study in Industrial Engineering must meet both university and departmental criteria. In some cases, students may be admitted on a provisional basis (see below) pending successful completion of prerequisite work. In all matters concerning admission, decisions made by the Departmental Graduate Committee are final.

Students who do not have a bachelor's degree in industrial engineering are required to complete the following prerequisite courses before undertaking graduate study:
EGN 3443: Statistical Topics in Industrial Engineering or an equivalent course (as determined by the graduate committee)
MAC 2313: Calculus with Analytic Geometry III, **OR** MAS 3105: Applied Linear Algebra (or an equivalent course, as determined by the graduate committee)
ESI 3312C: Operations Research I: Deterministic **OR** ESI 4313: Operations Research II: Nondeterministic (or an equivalent course, as determined by the graduate committee)
A class in FORTRAN, PASCAL, or C (required as evidence of proficiency in programming)
These prerequisites are intended to ensure an adequate background in mathematics, computing and engineering prior to graduate studies in Industrial Engineering. Although graduate courses may be taken before all prerequisite requirements have been satisfied, students must make significant progress each semester towards satisfying their prerequisites. Degree plans cannot be filed until after the prerequisites have been satisfied.
Students must average B or better on their prerequisites with no grade lower than a C. Prerequisite courses may not be taken on a pass/fail basis. Students who have lower than a 3.0 cumulative GPA on prerequisite work will be placed on probation. If a student makes less than a 3.0 on any prerequisite work while on probation, the student will be removed from the program.
In some cases, students may be asked to take additional prerequisite courses before beginning graduate study. If required, additional prerequisite courses will be specifically identified in the letter of admission.
BS or MS Degree in Industrial Engineering, science or mathematics from an accredited college or university.
A grade point average (GPA) of at least 3.4 on a 4.0 scale.
A minimum score of 155 quantitative and 146 verbal on the GRE test, GRE waiver request form.

Three Letters of Recommendation Three signed letters of recommendation on official letterheads, from academic or professionals who can comment on the academic and research potential of the applicant.
Credit Requirements
International Credit Requirements International applicants or degrees earned from international institutions must submit official transcripts through a NACES approved evaluator. We recommend using SpanTran for your course-by-course evaluation. We are unable to review applications with unofficial transcripts from international institutions. US Credit Requirements Credits earned from US institutions can be reviewed with unofficial transcripts.
For International students, an English Proficiency Score Report is required if:
The applicant's country's official language is NOT English or
The applicant did NOT graduate from an accredited US institution with either a bachelor's or master's degree.
