Master of Arts in Journalism

The Master of Arts degree program provides students with the exciting opportunity to acquire lifelong skills and knowledge as critical thinkers, excellent writers, and visual communicators in preparation for journalism careers in new media technologies and traditional media anywhere in the world. It provides flexibility to adapt to the needs of individuals for advanced study or for those without prior media experience or journalism education. It also encourages students to gain expertise in an area of study outside journalism that coincides with their future goals. The program appeals to applicants who seek employment in related areas of innovative journalism, including mobile or online media, radio and TV news, documentaries, newspapers, magazines, photojournalism and other visual communication, media management, public relations, and journalism for domestic or international markets. It serves applicants who seek fundamental, advanced and specialized courses in journalism and related fields, who wish to pursue doctoral study, who are professional journalists planning to advance in the industry, and those who will seek opportunities in fields such as environmental journalism and international journalism.

Three (3) letters of recommendation from persons familiar with your academic or professional work who are willing to assess your aptitude for successful graduate work. Once you have listed your recommenders and their email addresses, the system will generate an email to your recommenders explaining the process to submit their letters electronically.
An Academic Statement: A concise academic statement (1,000 words max) of your plans for graduate study, your career goals and how MSU's Journalism M.A. program will help you meet your career and educational objectives.
A Personal Statement: A concise personal statement (750 words max.) about how your background and life experiences, including social, economic, cultural, familial, educational or other opportunities or challenges motivated your decision to pursue a graduate degree.
A CV or Resume: Include all activities that account for your time since earning a bachelor's degree (e.g., employment, military service, travel). Be sure to include the type of activity, name of employer, city/state and dates. List the most recent activity first. Also, include all relevant professional experiences, locations, dates, etc.
Note for International applicants only: The Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL) is required. On the internet-based test, students must score a minimum average of 93 with no sub-scores below 22. IELTS- Minimum average score of 6.5 No sub-score below 6.0
