Associate in Arts - Liberal Studies (Education Emphasis)

The Liberal Studies: Emphasis in Education Degree prepares students to transfer to a Liberal StudiesTeacher Education bachelor's degree program. The degree is intended to provide students with options to select appropriate coursework to meet lower-division requirements of the Liberal Studies program of the four-year institution they are planning to attend. Articulation agreements for most Liberal StudiesTeacher Education programs offered at the University of California and the California State University systems are available on the ASSIST website.

Liberal StudiesTeaching Education programs are different at each four-year institution. Therefore, students must select their courses for the Associate Degree in consultation with an SBCC academic counselor to ensure they satisfy the lower-division preparation for the Liberal Studies program of the four-year institution to which they are planning to transfer.

The Liberal Studies: Emphasis in Education Degree at Santa Barbara City College is an interdisciplinary program that provides students with a foundation of knowledge in the areas of English composition, critical thinking, oral communication, physical and life sciences, arts and humanities, and social sciences. Through this program, students acquire a breadth of knowledge across multiple disciplines, explore how knowledge across disciplines can be connected, analyze and evaluate ideas using the tools of critical thinking, and demonstrate effective communication skills in reading, writing, listening and speaking. Since Liberal Studies is a college-wide interdisciplinary Associate Degree program, it does not have departmental affiliation. Inquiries regarding the Liberal Studies program should be directed to an academic counselor or the Dean, Educational Programs - Student Development and Counseling.

All applicants must have the equivalent of a 2.00 U.S. GPA.

Studied for a minimum of 3 years in English at an international secondary school.
Attended a US high school or secondary school in a country where English is the primary language of instruction for at least one year.
Completed all years of study in a secondary school in Swedish, Norwegian, Danish, Finnish, German, or Dutch countries and received passing grades in English.
Attended a U.S. college or university for at least one semester (non-ESL courses).
Attended at least one semester of non-ESL courses at a college or university where English is the primary language of instruction.
Submit a copy of your test result showing one of the minimum scores listed below.
IELTS: 5.5
TOEFL: PBT 450, CBT 160, IBT 60
Pearson Test of English: 45
PTE Academic: 44
High School/College Transcripts
Transcripts for all coursework completed in high school (secondary school), English language programs, and university or college. Transcripts should be translated into English by an official translator and/or translating agency.
Unofficial transcripts are sufficient for admission purposes.
Official transcripts are required for athletic eligibility, and may be submitted at a later date.
If you are under 18 years old at the time of your first semester start date, you will need to submit a high school diploma.
A high school diploma is not required for students who are 18 years old or older.
